I heard him live a couple years ago and he was playing a 900 series Monette at the time. I don't know what he plays now. |

He's got a Monette that was designed just for him. They describe it as being a lead and small group jazz horn. In fact when I was ordering my Monette I would have gone for that one if it wasn't only availible in the Prana format..... The model is called the 994WJ. _________________ Andrew Fowler

Not sure which LAWLER he used but on the liner note of his first CD "MINOR MUTINY", he thanks Fred Powell and everyone at LAWLER Trumpets. I would love to know which one myself. Actually, I asked Mr. Lawler but I don't remember getting an answer.
As for the BACH, I just assumed on this. He's shown on the cover of his second release "ON THE ONE" playing an older model BACH. I assumed it's what he was using cause no one leaves home for a photo shoot and not bring there baby along for the session.... IMO this is his best recording and he displays a kick A$$ sound. You're right on target about the quality of Kisor's playing on the cd, "ON THE ONE". That's some amazing playing. He's got it all going on that recording.

It seems that Kisor switched horns quite a bit in the past. I´ve seen him on photos playing a Martin Committee with a Bach Megatone and an Olds Clark Terry trumpet. _________________ All the best

I saw Ryan Kisor perform live when he was 14 years old. He was a guest performer at the 1989 AFM Convention in Nashville, Tennessee and was backed up by British pianist John Patrick, Dubuque drummer Keith Marugg, and a bassist who's name I can't recall. I especially remember him playing Joy Spring and couldn't believe what I was hearing from a 14-year-old kid! Absolutely amazing. A few years ago I saw him again with the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra in Cleveland. BTW, Ryan was playing a Bach in high school. _________________ C. G. Conn 60B Super Connstellation

What mouthpiece does he use? In what recordings did he use non-monette equipment? _________________ ***If you don't try there's a 100% chance you'll fail*** |

I don't know about his mouthpiece set-up but his first two CDs were pre-MONETTEs.
This seems to be a heavy issue for you.......... I believe he has a site if it's that important to you!.......
He is an awesome musician and a phanomonal jazz artist, no matter what equipment he happens to have at his disposal at the time. Sorry, but I'm starting to loose the point...... _________________ LAWLER TL-6

When Ryan was in DC late last year with LCJO I had a chance to talk to him between sets. At the time he was playing a gold plated Schilke and what appeared to be a STC3 Monette mouthpiece (it was huge). He sounded amazing that night and he sounded amazing when he was playing on his Monette in other shows. If you want to sound like Ryan - scoop up one of his CDs and really listen. Pick a two or three note phrase and try to mimic it exactly. He is a monster of a player and REALLY creative. His solos are a joy to listen to. It definitely ain't the equipment. _________________ Eric M. Brewington

Work for a good sound with every breath you take. Listen to his sound, recordings and transcribe your butt off. I promise, you'll sound like Mr. Kisor in NO TIME.... _________________ LAWLER TL-6

Great advice. I love Ryan Kisor's playing regardless of his equipment. BTW, some good news that maybe everybody doesn't know. Ryan's got some great recordings that are available through Japanese distributors. The bad news is that they will set you back around $45 per cd (ouch!!). I've been trying to add a few to my collection each year. Same situation with The Manhattan Jazz Quintet with Lou Soloff. Lots of recordings but, again, Japanese distributors. Kah-ching, kah-ching.

I've seen Ryan Kisor on : Bach 1 1/2C standard and megatone, Yamaha 16C4 GP, and now monette B2 ! Trumpet wise : Bach, Schilke, Martin commitee, Calichio and now, Monette 900 serie ! _________________ to practice or not to practice |

Hey guys... be sure to get Horace Silver's Jazz Has a Sense of Humor. Ryan plays his butt off on that one too... Jimmy Greene on tenor... great CD. _________________ Eric M. Brewington
