I am trying to put together a list of Buescher model designations, and here is what I have so far:
Model 8 (New England Model) - small bore
Model 9 - small bore
Model 10-22 - medium bore
Model 11 with A to Bb key adjustment
Model 13 - Bb to A rotary valve change
Model Number 200 (New England Model) - small bore
Model Number 202 - small bore
Model Number 212 - (Professional Model) - medium bore
Model Number 2 - peashooter design
Model Number 220 "Peashooter" with resemblances to later "400" model
Model Number 232 Aristocrat
Model Number 235 Aristocrat Custom Built
Model Number 238 Aristocrat Custom Built
Does anyone else out there have additional model numbers (with corresponding serial number series, i.e., 240xxx, not the exact serial number, plus special characteristics like a quick change valve, etc.) that could be added to this list? Your feedback would be greatly appreciated! Until I started putting this list together, I didn't realize there were so many types of Buescher trumpets! |

Buescher Aristocrat Custom Built
240
serial number 289807 made in about 1937
Bell is 4 1/2 inches wide, and i think its a small bore
Serial number even in each valve and individual valve parts, bought it off ebay, laqures not great condition and bells pretty beaten up. Valve action is amazing and the slides move better than my yamaha. Produces a beautiful sound which can't be over blown, even though it has a small bell and small bore it produces a thick rich mellow sound.

There was a beautiful 1950s Beuscher 400 Super on Ebay a few weeks back. Would you exclude that from an Beuscher list? It "looked good" but I've never seen one in person or played one.

Thanks for the replies -- some good information here! The model 240 Aristocrat Custom Built is a new one on me. I have a "peashooter" version of that that has been well played. The lead pipe must have at least 4 or 5 patches on it and it almost looks like a work of art! Must have been some bar fight! I didn't mean to cut the designation list off so early and would definitely include the Buescher "400" models. I am basically trying to get a list that would cover the time period up until they just made the student horns, which I guess was late 1950s to early 1960s. The problem I have with most of my Bueschers is the valves are pretty shot since they got played so much. I do have a New England model with decent valves (circa 1925) that still has a pretty tone in the (limited) range I can play in. |

The valves on mine are perfect!!
You hear alot of people don't like the under sprung type valves, but the 232 has the fastest valves of all my horns. All I have to do is take a few dents out and the curve in the bell.
Those '400' models are next on my list of must haves. I love the valve blocks. _________________ 2007 Eclipse MR

Model 244 Aristocrat Custom Built True Tone (LP), serial 357xxx.
Currently a basket case, but I'll rebuild it soon. Valves are wonderful on these horns. Wish I could find a cornet with the same valves!

Hello,
I have an old Buescher True-Tone model 11, with the Bb to A change valve. The serial number is 159xxx, which puts the horn around 1924?. The horn is small bore and it came with a cornet mothpiece adapter. The engraving on the horn is most impressive and there are only minor dings here or there, no bigger than a pin head. I bought it off of ebay a few months ago and it is in pristine condition. The whole thing is gold plated and came with a gold plated Buescher 17 mouthpiece and gold mute with a Buescher stamp on it which reads "The Buescher True-Tone Elkhart, Ind". The cool thing is that my horn also came with the original slide grease, the original lyre, and the original cleaning rod. The whole thing is in the original case and is in overall superior condition. I hope this helps with your serial number conquest. If you need pictures or anything, feel free to email me.
Thanks,
George "Buck" Meyer

Sorry, forgot to mention that it has the number 11 stamped near the serial number along with the letters LP. |

Thanks for the info on the model 11. If you go to http://www.redhotjazz.com/etvoinfo.html, you'll see a picture of the Erskine Tate Vendome Orchestra, from Chicago. The second trumpet player from the right is Louis Armstrong, and I believe that he is playing a model 11 Buescher like yours. Armstrong was known to have favored Bueschers from the mid-late twenties. In fact, there is a picture somewhere of one of his bands in around 1927-28 with a banner that states that the band uses Buescher instruments exclusively.
One thing I have noticed about these vintage Bueschers is that, WITH THE ORIGINAL MOUTHPIECE, it is possible to play more easily in an upper register. I wonder in Armstrong's case if that, along with his phenomenal stamina, helped him to punch out all of those high notes early in his career. I have also wondered if this lead to his lip breakdown a few years later, when he switched from a Buescher to a fuller-bore Selmer, and still maybe tried to play with the same hard pressure embouchure on a larger bore horn. Just a theory.
Sounds like your Buescher came "fully loaded" and I have also been lucky to get some of these horns with their cleaning rod, and other accessories intact. I would love to see some photos of your model 11, if it wouldn't be too much trouble. Thanks again for your response. |

I just wanted to post and let everybody know that I am selling my Buescher Model 11. It is listed in the marketplace. I'm selling because I don't get enough use out of it and I hate for it to sit. It is a great horn, over 80 years old and plays wonderfully. _________________ My stuff:

I have a Buescher Aristocrat Herald trumpet from the 1960's. I have no idea what the model number is, though. _________________ Jay

There are photos of a few vintage Bueschers on my website:
paulayickvintagebrass.com
click on trumpets then look for Buescher and when you find one you want to view there will be a fileman.htm file in the diectory that will open thumbnails. _________________ Marquis de Sade: "In art, one has to kill one's father." |
