.............on a regular basis???
I just picked one up out of curiosity, and it is one VERY nice horn.
I was wondering if it had developed a following, sort of like the NY Bachs....

My two favourite horns are my Recording and my Mendez. The Mendez was bought by a high school friend in '64 and when he died I bought it from the family. Excellent horn, fantastic sound ... but of course, it is an Olds! _________________ Bill

I had a trumpet teacher in Saskatoon in the early 70's that had a Mendez trumpet. At the time they were quite expensive. And as a kid I knew one day I would get myself a horn like Wally had.
Recently I bought one on EBAY, that is in very good condition. I love the sound and the dynamics it has. I have played different mp.s on it but tend to like the Bach 3C for a brassy full sound.
I play the horn most everyday, and regularly with the concert band I play with.
Perhaps Olds horns were popular in Canada during that era because a lot of people had them. The guys from the Left coast tended to have Bachs, which I never really cared for that much. _________________ 1964 Olds Ambassador

My dad bougth me a Mendez in 1957 when I was 10. I loved it but my second year in music school in 1969 I caved to peer pressure and sold it for a L bore Bach. In retrospect he Mendez was way better. Around 8 years ago I started searching for another Mendez and since that time had a few and they are as good as I remembered. It was looking for my long lost Mendez that got me interested in collecting. _________________ Marquis de Sade: "In art, one has to kill one's father." |

The price for a reasonably nice one seems to be in the $700 range. Your milage may vary......... _________________ Schilke B4L

Hello
All of who own the "Olds Mendez" made in Fullerton, CA - In your opinion is this a open -free dark blowing horn as a "Martin Committee #3" or a "Conn Vintage 1" with/without silver bell ?
Thanks

Wheezer | No. Not particularly dark. Some built-in resistance. ML bore. Nice triggers on both 1 and 3. _________________ veery715

I have a '52 Mendez trumpet which according to the Olds registry is one of the first 200 to be made. Mines an 'odd ball' not having the bumper rings on the third and first tuning slides. I've checked and apparently this against another of the same period and apparently it was normal.
I also own the Olds Mendez Cornet which I bought recently through Fred Circenska at Quality Brass.
I use both horns regularly, sometimes I use the cornet in deference to using the trumpet for solo work if the solo is exposed enough to let the lesser volume of the cornet shine through.
Recently I managed to get hold of a pristine Recording trumpet from Fred, so the Mendez's are on the back burner for a while till I get the Recording out of my system. _________________ Chris.

Hi have two Olds " Mendez " Trumpets.
Play the lacquered one at rehearsals and rowdy events.
Play the Gold plated one at more formal events ( less chance of damage )
Play an Ambassador in winter parades ( on a float )
Play a Super in summer parades ( on a float )
Play a Studio Cornet when cornet is required |

Yowsa! I've had my '54 LA-built Mendez for a long time. Best horn I've ever played. I blew a '60s Martin Committe lg bore recently. Nice horn as well. Only different. I have yet to play a Bach, Schilke, Besson, Yamaha (with or without kick starter!) or anything else that is better than the Mendez for what I play (big band, concert band, solos, but nothing serious).
But that's for me. Other's may have a different experience. But one of the great horns, nonetheless. _________________ Olds Mendez (1959), Besson New Creation Cornet (1925); Courtois Grand Siecle C (1973),Holton 23 D (with Bach 236 bell and Melk lead pipe) (1962); Olds E Flat (mid 1960s), Olds Flugelhorn (1962) Curry 7DE and 7P mouthpieces |

I have owned one for only a year [#262597, Fullerton, Ca]. It is my only horn and I use it for big band, concert band and playing in a church orchestra. I love the sound and the feel. The third valve slide sticks occasionally, but otherwise it is wonderful. |

I have a silver plated Mendez which I play periodically. It seems to me to be a powerful horn so I refrain from using it when playing 2nd part. Two years ago I refurbished a brass Mendez as a Christmas present for my grandson. It turned out beautiful. He enjoys playing it in his high school concert and jazz band. The unique 1st and 3rd slide spring-loaded levers are a joy to use although I do not like to take them apart for cleaning. All in all, I'd recommend obtaining one if you have the opportunity. |

I just bought a ’67 Mendez to go with my ‘67 Recording. Just wanted to see what it sounded like plus I am used to the 3rd valve trigger and wanted to try out the 1st valve trigger. The valves are like butter, very smooth. I think it’s a little brighter than my Recording but I haven’t played it much since it just got out of the shop. So far so good. |
