I am interested in hearing opinions on Jo-Ral's cup mute. I own a Jo-Ral straight and love it, much better than the Denis Wick's I see a lot around me. I have experience on Humes & Berg and Denis Wick cup mutes (to me, the DW is better than the H&B) but am really curious as to the Jo-Ral cup. Any opinions?

Christine,
I used to own a Jo-Ral tritone mute and it was quite good. However, I have been far more impressed with my Denis Wick adjustable cup because there are so many degrees of variation you can get in timbre from it. The DW adj cup can also be used as a straight mute (by removing the cup) and a practice mute (by closing the cup completely). I would recommend that you try both mutes at a local store so that you can find the mute that works best for you. Good Luck

I don't know about the Jo Ral cup mutes but I have a Stomvi adjustable copper mute and have tried the Wick adjustable also. These are super mutes especially the Stomvi. Super well made and a really nice sound. I would think everybody would want the adjustable models. I got my Stomvi mute through Cambrass and you can pick up the Wick adjustable most anywhere.

I got the Joral but never liked it, never even used it. I have used the muffler ring on my straight mute a few times. The Denis Wick is the one to get. |

I use the JoRal tritone mute as a practice mute. I tried it on a few gigs and didn't like it.

I like mine, although I HAD to get the Humes & Burg so I blend with the sections I play with most often. I found the JoRal to be good and easy to change timbres on, but I haven't tried the Wick. Just thought I would put something positive up here... _________________ Nicholas Dyson
