Comments please?.....

Carmine taught us to breathe through the nose for these exercises,

but personally I have found that this way of taking in air sometimes tends to constrict my throat somewhat, and at those times I choose to breathe through the corners of my mouth.

However you choose to breathe, do not dislodge or alter the placement of your mouthpiece on your embouchure any more than is absolutely necessary.

Sam Burtis

CR: Roddy, If I understand this correctly, You are quoting Sam Burtis as saying,

"Carmine taught us to breathe through the nose for these exercises,

but personally I have found that this way of taking in air sometimes tends to constrict my throat somewhat, and at those times I choose to breathe through the corners of my mouth.

However you choose to breathe, do not dislodge or alter the placement of your mouthpiece on your embouchure any more than is absolutely necessary."

It appears Sam finds that sometimes nose breathing constricts his throat. When this happens he breathes through the corners of his mouth being careful to "not dislodge or alter the placement of your mouthpiece on your embouchure any more than is absolutely necessary."

Carmine would also suggest this procedure if the student had a cold and had difficulty with nose breathing as a result. Breathing through the corners was always a secondary choice and not an alternate breathing procedure to the nose breathing prescribed in the Four Rules.

Roddy,

Yes, careful mouth breathing through the corners is allowed when nose breathing is obstructed.

I have never experienced a feeling of throat constriction due to nose breathing. Sam Burtis is an expert on the Caruso approach and has obviously found an additional circumstance that requires that there be another exception to the rule.

Quick query -- is Sam a trombone player? If so, perhaps he needed the extra air volume.

Sam also doubles on bass trombone & tuba (and applies the method to all of his instruments).

The only time I have ever had students have a problem with the nose breath causing constriction is if they "sniffed" the breath into the sinuses instead of filling the lungs. I have found that I can fix this by insisting that they use at least 3 beats to inhale.

They can lengthen each rest at first if necessary to accomodate the longer inhale. If I insist that they inhale for 3 counts then they have to fill the lungs.
