I'm looking for some ballads written for trumpet or flugel. Being a high-schooler, I think way too much emphasis is put on technicality and range, and not enough on tone and overall musicality (In highschool, at least). So, any good ballads out there? Preferably something classical or something jazzy. No new age, rock, or anything like that.

Thanks,
Limits

I Remember Clifford is one of my favorites. If you play that in a combo I would sugest you to listen to the recording of I Remember Clifford by Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers. They do a double time in the solo section.
Another great ballad is Summertime. When my jazz combo did this chart, we did a double time at the solo section. I actually sugest doing a double time in any ballad (if you are playing in a combo) just to keep the energy up.
Nica's Dream is great canadiate for a ballad. It sounds real nice on flugel. Again, a double time would fit really good. Actually, a double time would do well at the bridge while you are still playing the melody.
Samantha, written by Sammy Nestico, is a great classic ballad. I have played that one a variety show with a harmon mute in my trumpet.
And Then She Wept, written by Randy Brecker, is a great one for flugel. The Brecker Brothers do a nice double time feel at the solo section on the album Out of the Loop.
Body and Soul is one of the greatest ballads ever written. So many people has done great stuff with it. (i.e. Double Time, Triplet Feel, Latin)
The Shadow of Your Smile is a great one to start out as a ballad then go to a Bosa Nova second time through the melody. Also would be a great one for flugel.
Whatever ballad you do, one thing is important, make it creative and interesting. Do creative intros, interludes, outros. People like that and it keeps it exciting.

Awesome suggestions guys! I like all the ones you all suggested.

What about classical though? Not necissarily for trumpet, but what about cello, viola, violin? Something that would easily convert to trumpet music.

BLUE - Bobby Shew

Sweet, simple, and to the point.
