Conte Candoli is one of my favorites -- I remember watching him on the tonight show and his great solo work with the Louis Bellson band (the '150 mph' album is terrific).
Once upon a time I was attempting to buy any old Kenton albums with Maynard on it and came across 'New Concepts of Artistry in Rhythm', recorded in 1951. Talk about an amazing line-up (Frank Rosolino, George Roberts, Maynard, . . .). I had no idea who Conte Candoli was at that time, but there's a tune on there, 'Portrait of a Count', and there's a break where he just turns the horn inside out!
He was, in my eyes, one of the great big-band soloists.
thanks for the thread. |

I was very sad to read of Conte's passing. I had the opportunity to hear him, Snooky and Doc at a taping of the Tonight Show in the mid-eighties. It will always remain as one of my treasured musical memories.
