Hi all...
I just found this forum. My name is Sam Burtis, and I am a freelance trombonist in NYC. (Please forgive my choice of instrument...blame the grammar school teacher who gave it to me. I do...)
I studied w/Carmine for many years, and became quite close to him personally as well.
I just want to suggest that you read a couple of articles I wrote on the Online Trombone Journal about Carmine's approach. For those of you who are trying to figure out how to use his "method" (and there was no method, really, only Carmine and each individual student...), the articles deal primarily w/the underlying ideas behind the exercises, and a number of people have found them to be quite useful in regard to how to think about what they are doing vis a vis Carmine's stuff.
If you are interested, go to <http://www.trombone.org/articles/browse.asp>, and on the pull down Authors menu choose, "Burtis, Sam". The articles about Carmine are the first two listed. If you're curious about my own development of some of his concepts, there are also several other articles listed there that pertain equally well to other brass instruments than the trombone.
Later...
Sam Burtis
