Ladies and Gentlemen,
I'm looking for a straight mute to use in very soft passages in Orchestras and Brass Bands. What do you recommend? |

A Jo-Ral with copper bottom or there are also wooden straight mutes on the market. These would be the best but I don't know the brand. I will find it out. |

Stay away from metal mutes for soft passages.
Here are a bunch of good ones:
Trumcor Lyric Mute
Montreal Mutes
Wallace Red mute
Bach Black plastic mute
AMR wicker mute
Ward's Mute No. 86 -- Montreal mute copy (and more durable than the Montreal mute)
Many more...but this is a good start. Depends on how soft you need to play. The Trumcor, Wallace, Bach plastic are great soft mutes. The others are for EXTREMELY soft playing.
Hope this helps |

The most popular one that I have seen a lot is the Bach black plastic straight mute. |

A common trick for getting a softer straight (or cup, or...) mute is to place cotton balls inside the mute. They are available from Walmart and other discount stores, in the makeup section -- or do like me and steal from your wife! Oops, err, not that I steal from your wife, steal from mine -- no, that's not quite right -- just buy the durn things! The balls dampen the sound, absorb some of the higher overtones, and control vibrations in the mute to some degree, making a softer and "purer" tone.
The Lyric, Bach plastic, Montreal, and Red are the ones I've heard about the most. Plus, the old straight fiber mute, with cotton balls in it (cheapest!)

Marcus Bonna has a soft straight mute out as well. I have not played it personally but have loved every other MB mute I've tried. Check it out, I doubt you would be dissapointed. |

I don't know how legit this is but - I have used the padding that came with a JoRal cup mute.
it is donut shaped - and goes over the mute to the just below the corks. |

I do the JoRal donut trick. I don't like it for extremely soft passages as the donut stuff is so thick, but it works great for mp stuff. I have seen and used some donuts (can't remember the name) that are made of a thin black foam. This worked wonderfully. The cotton ball thrick works well too but it can be a pain to get them all out!
