I have read in several places that Maynard Ferguson played a "Conn Liberator" from 1967 to 1972 (between his 38B Connstellation and the Holton). However, I have absolutely no idea what model (Conn) trumpet the "Liberator" is. My only guess is that it is the same as what Conn's 1966 catalog describes as the "60B Sixty-B" (yes, really. Not very imaginative huh?)
Any suggestions?

I have a picture of Maynard from the early 70s with a trumpet that I always thought was a Conn 60B. Looks exactly like a 60B, and quite different from a Connstellation.
For those who never heard of a 60B, it was a silver plated very lightweight trumpet introduced in the late sixties as Conn's top-of-the-line professional trumpet. It was created in answer to the extreme popularity of the Schilke B models and the King Silver Flair (HN White Co.) The 60B was later modified and called the 61B by adding an adjustable thumb saddle. _________________ C. G. Conn 60B Super Connstellation

Those 60Bs were real screamers as lead horns. Small bore but lots of sound and sizzle . . . and an easy upper register.
Ironically, there's a fine CLASSICAL player in my area that still uses his 60B that his folks got him before majoring in music at UGA in the mid-60s. He uses a JET-TONE mouthpiece in it also . . . but you'd NEVER guess he played a 60B/Jet Tone "Al Hirt" by his gorgeous legit tone!
Sincerely,
Tom Turner |

It's my understanding that the "Liberator" was made by Boosey and Hawkes- Besson.

The 60B came in lacquer or silver. Listed at 0.459 inches, the bore is not exactly small. It is a lighter weight horn, though, especailly compared to the Connsetellation 38B. _________________ Vintage One 1BR, GR 66QMX

The Liberator must have been a B-24 model. _________________ So many horns, so little time........

I ,also, was under the impression that the Liberator that Maynard played was a Boosey and Hawkes. It seems that I read that somewhere, I
beleive that it was in an interview with Maynard. |

Geez, if Christine had posed this question two weeks ago about the Liberator (which I too think was a B & H trumpet), I could have asked Maynard himself! I had the opportunity to sit and talk to him after he played a private engagement with his BBN band at a local country club. _________________ C. G. Conn 60B Super Connstellation

Wow! Talk about dragging up an old post! 19 September 2002. Plankowner, you must have come by this post through a search or something?
My information says it did have a 0.459" bore, and was "very lightweight". I didn't know the 61B (which is after the period I am interested, but I have heard of it), is a 60B with a thumb saddle.

Hi Christine,
I didn't realize that I dragged up an old post. I must have clicked something wrong. Anyway, maybe we will learn something interesting about the Liberator trumpet. My old photo of Maynard certainly shows him holding a 60B as I am very familiar with that old model (unless the Liberator was a copy.) He may have played one for a very short time while he was still endorsing Conn.
When the 60B was introduced in the late 60s, it was described by Conn in their catalog as the finest trumpet ever created by Conn and was placed atop the 38B in the trumpet lineup. It came with a greenish naugahide case cover, naugahide mute case, and an extra set of finger buttons- a deluxe outfit. Conn would probably want Maynard playing their new premium trumpet, but that was also about the same time that MF left for the UK and India. His relationship with Conn ended and he later teamed up with Holton/Leblanc on his return to US touring. I was in the military during that era, so I don't know exact dates. _________________ C. G. Yes. If you can see them but I can't, I suspect you are either hosting them from a place you have access to but I haven't, or using a URL with a relative path which works for you but not for me?

Just to let you know. I used imageshack to host the pics. I am real computer iliterate so I am not sure if that helps. |
