here's a list of criteria that may be worth considering for a faq on what constitutes a good trumpetherald post.
posts should be:
1. about trumpets (or a closely related instrument) or trumpet playing
2. of interest to most other trumpetherald members
3. factual, or supported with fact
4. friendly
5. respectful of others
6. not repetitious of other recent posts
7. not excessively long
8. reasonably well-composed, with correct spelling
9. in good taste
10. a post you would enjoy reading yourself

i think i violate every one of those rules. i'll start mentioning the TRUMPET in my posts so i don't violate all of the rules.

I agree with you on “friendly” and “respectful of others.” I admire these two characteristics in a person very much. It is great if you can really play trumpet and possess a tremendous amount of knowledge about trumpet, but I admire you even more if you are a great person, too. _________________ Janell Carter

usually, my edits are for clarity. i write for a living and i'm a big believer in the idea that good writing is really good rewriting.
(i only wish it worked that way in trumpet playing. most playing situations don't allow for alternate takes. i guess that's why we practice!) _________________ Jim Hatfield

Hello jhatpro, IMO:
1) "About trumpets..." - It seems that this criteria has already been set and approved in outline form on this forum by it's administrator(s).
(2) "of interest ..." - please refer to #1 above.
(3) "factual, ..." - let's hope but this is hard to make as a requirement.
(4) "friendly" - this goes with #5, IMO, and should be considered almost in place of #1 in terms of importance. If we had just #1 and #4, this would be more than sufficient.
(5) "respectful of others" - goes with #4 for one can't be genuinely friendly without respect, IMO.
(6) "not repetitious of other recent posts" - maybe do a subject search and find first? It seems to me, jhatpro, that by not deleting your previous listings of editing your message was an unneccesary repetition for us to read. If writing once to you is problematic, then compose it first in Word, sit on it for a few hours or days, do your spell check and final version before posting it on this forum. If everyone would do this, I believe that the posts would be more even tempered, not so emotional and maybe even better composed altogether.
(7) "not excessively long" - standards here are going to be hard to define, IMO.
( "reasonably well-composed, with correct spelling" - we are not writers like you and it even could be very well one of the reasons why some top level professionals do not participate on forums because their English could be very weak, takes too much time to compose, etc. Plus, correct spelling is a problem for almost everyone. I would suggest having this forum provide a spell check if no one can or wants to do the same in Word for instance.
I use to hate writing (before internet which dates me), flunked English in school but rose above it to learn again. I wrote Congressional briefings while working for HUD and correspondance for President Carter. Now, ah can write mah feelin's in menny diffrunt ways, doesn't yo' know.
(9) "in good taste" - subjective and all a matter of taste ... what is sweet to others may be sour to you or to me.
(10) "a post you would enjoy reading yourself" - again a matter of taste. Some don't mind and would prefer reading XXXX posts but I don't. I think that your point here goes in line with the old saying of "Don't do unto others what you would not want them to do to you."
All in all, the forum administrator(s) should be the one(s) to set and maintain standards of the posts listed in this forum by giving those guidlines online or offline ifwhen someone needs it.
How the TH forum administrators are appointed to this position could be a matter of interests and maybe a point of intervention should we want changes in this forum which are being blocked, ignored, etc.
WHEW!!
Liad
FYI, this is my second edition of this message and I deleted the first listing of it.

liad,
you raise some good points. my intent was only to provide a short list of guidelines that might be useful as a faq, which currently do not address the question of what constitutes a good post.

Actually, Jim, you made a good effort and IMO it is efforts like yours which help to really get things moving in the right direction.
I think it would be helpful to look at other trumpet forum guidlines so that we don't try to re-invent the wheel so to speak. Here is TPIN's Guidelines for Posting as a starter.
http://www.tpin.org/TPIN_Guide.html
See what you can gleen out of that Jim and see what we can use here on TH.
Be well and all the best,
Liad |

Criteria number 1 says posts should be about trumpets and/or trumpet playing. Here is my question. What does this thread have to do with trumpets or trumpet playing? _________________ Ben Love
