I'm going to be in New York on Holiday for the first few days of January. Anyone have any must-do suggestions as I've never been before? Seeing a great big band at a jazz club is high on the agenda!

Many thanks

What dates will you be in?

If you're going to be around January 3 - 8, check out Sherrie Miracle & the DIVA Jazz Orchestra at the Blue Note. They're awesome. I once took lessons from one of the members and it was a blast:

Some food places that I can recommend:

Downtown:
Corner Bistro - Burgers (cash only)
John's Pizzaria - Pizza
Any dim sum place that's crowded in Chinatown - Chinese
Masa - Japanese (expensive)

Midtown and Uptown:
Aureole - Contemporary
Aquavit - Scandinavian
Any crowded Indian restaurant on Curry Hill
Eleven Madison Park - Chef Danny Meyer
Smith & Wollensky's - Steaks

Other things to do:
- Take a bus tour and learn a bit about NYC.
- Go see the Christmas Tree at Rockefeller Center.
- Take the "A" Train and enjoy gospel in Harlem.
- Take a tour of Lincoln Center.
- Take a tour of Yankee Stadium.
- Go into Queens and get some Greek food.
- Curse someone off.

While you're at it, pick up a few horns on 48th Street (New York Trumpet Company, Sam Ash, Manny's).

http://newyork.citysearch.com/ should give you a good start.

Have a great time. We hope you enjoy your stay.

So many things to see and do! I used to work in the Paramount Building at 1501 Broadway and my wife and I go to NYC every spring for a few days to see some B'way shows and enjoy the great restaurants.
Some things you might like to see:
Lower Manhattan:
Visit Wall Street and Battery Park, view the Statue of Liberty from the park or take the ferry ride over to Liberty Island, and spend a few moments of reflection at Ground Zero and across the street at St. Paul's Episcopal Church (relief site during 9/11 rescue operations and so historic in that President George Washington attended this church.) These are all within walking distance of each other.
After seeing these places, have dinner in one of the terrific restaurants in Little Italy (Mullberry St at Canal Street) in lower Manhattan. No reservations needed, just pick one and walk in.

Midtown:
Rockefeller Center
Wander around Times Square.
Be sure to see a B'way show.
Window shop at Sak's Fifth Avenue (next to St. Paul's Cathedral on Fifth Ave.) and Macy's, the world's largest department store, 151 West 34th Street, at the foot of the Empire State Building, an American architectural icon. A trip to the top of the Empire State Building is worth the wait!

There are fabulous restaurants on every street in NYC!
Enjoy your trip to the Big Apple!!!
