I didnt know where else to post this, so....
Im currently in rehearsals playing clarinet and bari sax (yeah, i know) in a community production of Seussical. Clarinet being my primary instrument and bari a comfortable second, i was still a bit surpised to see that id be playing bari about 80% of the time...and its completely exhausting me! Ive never been as exhausted at the end of rehearsals as i am with this show, and as the bari part is pretty heavy duty i cant really leave much out....does anybody have any ideas of endurance during shows? Ive found that the glucose jellybeans help my headspins from too many low notes....

Thanks! Fiona

Well, you could try carbo-loading with some solid carbohydrates, as opposed to sugar, which probably wears off and gives you a headache. But eating right can only aid you in reaching your potential, you might need to practice some more to develop better endurance.

Nice.

I live on coffee during shows. Dirty, instant coffee. Before the show and during every break. After one night in the last show I did we had a round of charades with several drinks, then moved it to a cast member's house, yada yada yada I didn't sleep until after the show the next night - thank you coffee. Same thing happened the next weekend (but with a more exciting story we daren't get into). Ooh and it helps having a beer to look forward to at the end. And if it's the last night the excitement of pulling pranks on the others will keep you attentive.

Is it the air aspect that makes you tired? or chops?

Is it possible to get tired playing a reeded instrument like the sax compared to playing a trumpet? Not for me. When I used to play sax I put out less physical energy and got less exhausted playing the sax for 8 hours compared to putting in an hour or 2 on the trumpet.

The sax is a no brainer in terms of getting tired. I got bored playing long before I ever got physically tired playing a sax.

My chops are fine with the show, even with swapping from clari and bari, its just a physical tiredness from putting air through the bigger instrument, altho ive never experienced this before in playing sax.... i will try the carbs tho. Thanks!
