What do you all think of the satin metallic finishes? I personally like them, especially when tuning slides, etc. are left "shiny."

I like the look, but I've heard that the silver ones are harder to keep looking good. Gold is probably lower maintenance, as it is far more resistant to tarnishing.

The local repair guy warned me off of the satin silver particularly. He says it stains easily.

Nope...
Brass has to be shiny! Same with nickel trims.
Else, silver plated.

I love the look of my satin silver Lawler. Yes, the worst part is keeping it looking that way. It tarnishes easily but a can of Hagerty's takes care of that for a while.

As King Solomon once said, "There's nothing new under the sun."

The satin finish and combo finishes (bright/satin + silver and gold) have been around a long, long time.

They fell out of favor after the depression, due to extra costs.

Today some makers recommend against converting horns to satin finishes . . . either/or via scratch method or blast method, due to the thinner brass areas on most horns today that makes this a risk . . . especially for the "frosted" finish that is sooooooooooo gorgeous!

My Conn Victor from 1939 is a combination frosted silver w/ bright silver highlights AND a goldwash inner bell. Gorgeous! Plus, this finish type looks good over time.

That Lawler is a gorgeous looking horn too . . . and appears to probably be of the "frosted" type. That's good!

Sincerely,

Tom Turner

NOTE: I love the blasted, "frosted" look . . . but I'm not wild about the scratch finishes at all. I've seen some horns a couple of years old that have blemishes already.

The abrasive pads and/or brushes used gouge into the metal at varying amounts of thickness . . . creating uneven nooks and crannies. If any contaminants are present, the finishes will not adhere completely . . . and you may soon experience lacquer problems or plating problems.

My silver bead is a lot harder to keep clean than the old regular silver was, I'll give it that. I think I would have opted for gold.

I'm with you there Tom. If I could get every horn I ever play or will play frosted, I would. I won't.....but I would.

Gotta comment ... (ref: Tom Turner post):

Love those "nooks and crannies"!
