Wayne Bergeron's new "You Call This a Living?" What's amazing is how smoothly he moves between trumpet and flugel. Gorgeous sound on both.

Freddie Hubbard stuff from the late '60s & '70s:

"Up Jumped Spring" from "Backlash"
"First Light"
"Here's That Rainy Day" from "Straight Life"
"Sky Dive"

That's the sound I want from the flugel!

Yes, and IMO his trumpet sound from this period is THE ideal.

I will be checking into these recordings very soon. Thanks for the valuable information.

Any Art Farmer fans out there? How about any Art Farmer recordings? How about his followers’ recordings? How about recordings by those who were influenced by him?

OH YEAH Bill and Larry!!! Those are the first ones that come to mind!! How about one of those short and little known solos. I've always loved this short but really sweet solo that comes from a recording by the group "Yellowjackets". It was the first recording by the same name on a track called "The Hornet". Jerry Hey plays such a warm, fluid and gorgeous solo. Only about 24 bars or so but...REALLY PRETTY!!!

I had just ordered Freddie’s “First Light” and “Sky Dive.” I cannot wait to receive them! Thanks again for the recommendations, Pat and Larry. Maybe I will order some more at a later date, too.

Kenny Wheeler, Gnu Hi, 1976 ECM. Like the cathedral of flugalhorn. I read that Manfred Eicher(of ECM) asked Kenny who he'd like as side men for his solo debut on ECM, and he chose acoustic Keith Jarret, (in his heydays) Dave Holland and Jack Dejohnette. Not bad. Kenny's sound is huge and bell-like. His melodies/compositions are inspirational. Lovely cover on the album, too.

Other then Clark Terry and Art Farmer one of the best fluegelhornists I ever heard was Pete Minger.

I'd have to throw Roy Hargrove in as one to listen to. I heard him perform with Hancock and Brecker at the Warner Theater a few months ago and he did an AMAZING version of "My Ship". Actually, hearing him play is what prompted me to go out and buy my own flugelhorn!

Yeah Eric, I saw the same ensemble here in Chicago at Symphony Center. Roy really did have such a warm, round sound!

How could you not mention "Miles Ahead" and "Porgy And Bess" - Miles Davis. In my opinion those are the best flugelhorn recordings, hands down.

Also, can't forget Clark Terry: One On One. This had some really nice flugelhorn playing and he duets with with 14 different pianists including Monty Alexander, Roland Hanna, Marian McPartland and Geri Allen to name just a few.

Freddie Hubbard comes close, I liked his playing on Backlash and Sky Dive but the stuff Miles did was on another level.

Thanks for the recommendation of Clark Terry’s “One On One.” I own that one, too. I was hoping that someone would mention Clark.

Roy Hargrove did an album with strings and I really like the sound he gets out of his flugel. Of course just about anything by clark terry is great. Sandavol also sounds good on flugel which he seems to play on all ballads. Is the man incappabale of playing a ballad on trumpet? I also think he uses flugel on the con sorde section of the Artunian trumpet concert (with the london symphony).

I think Miles plays quite a bit of trumpet on "Porgy and Bess".

"Miles Ahead" is great. It should be in every trumpet player's collection.

Also, there are some wonderful recordings of Chet Baker playing flugelhorn from the early 1960s -- rereleased on CD as "Stairway to the Stars", "Lonely Star", and ...errr... I think it's called "On A Misty Night". REALLY GOOD stuff.

Hmmm...Really? I knew Miles played trumpet some on Porgy & Bess but he also does a lot of flugelhorn work, if you look at the picture of him playing with the band in the booklet, he is playing a flugel I believe. Well, either way, it's a great album.

Yeah, I would recommend Clark Terry to anyone. He plays as well now as he did 20-30 years ago...Who else can do that at the age of 82? Clark is one of the greatest ever.

I'd have to pull the recording out again. My mind's ear says that he's playing trumpet on, for example "There's a Boat That's Leaving Soon For New York", "Summertime", and "The Buzzard Song", but I could be wrong (it's been a few months since I had that one in the rotation at work)...

I'm pretty sure he plays flugel exclusively on "Miles Ahead". I think he's playing mostly trumpet on "Sketches of Spain", maybe on all of it.

As an aside, I really like Bobby Shew's sound on flugelhorn. There's a bunch of bootleg stuff of him with the BBC radio orchestra playing all these trumpet features, many of which are on flugel, and he just sounds great.
