I have the opportunity to have my horn engraved extensively. It will be in addition to what you see in the photo. One idea I have is a lion head coming up the side of the bell on one side, and a dragon coming up the other side. Maybe something on the outside of the bell flair?

I want to hear your ideas! What would you do?

Who's going to do the engraving? Do they have a website?

Cannonball. If you go to there website you can see some of the engravings they offer. Since I am an Educator I’m able to add on to the stock one that was already on the horn.

You could do your zodiac symbol. Otherwise, dragons are always cool.

I found out I’d have to choose from one of their engravings offered on their website (Tier 1 through 5). I’ll let you all know which one I choose and send pics when it’s engraved!

Cannonball’s engravings are awesome. Looking forward to seeing the pictures of your trumpet when it’s done.

I know the options you can choose from are limited, but since you asked for suggestions…

AR Resonance offers mouthpiece engraving and when I ordered my third mouthpiece cup from them, I wanted it engraved too. I’ve considered many things like the scifi logos or musical symbols. However, I finally decided on adding the names of my so and our child on the rim, and on the cup the names of all my trumpet teachers and fellow players who’ve inspired me over the years. It looks very nice in the standard flowing AR font, and its a fitting tribute to fond memories of old friends, some of whom are sadly no longer with us.

I can't post pics of it at the moment, because of technical difficulties, but I had a dragon engraving done on my Olds Super years ago.

I removed the bell from the horn and sent it to the engraver, thus allowing a truly winding dragon all the way back to the crook.

If the bell is engraved on an assembled trumpet, there are limits to that sort of visual fun.

I'll try and find and upload the pics later - it's all public domain if you want to steal the idea!

Just bear in mind that hand engraving when extensively, hardens the brass. If this is done radially unevenly, it will cause the bell to have uneven reflectance approaching the reflection point. Done evenly, it will still alter the spectrum.

Do you have anything to back that up ? Scientific study etc?

This is a fascinating concept, but I have to agree that some sort of scientific study will have to back you up.

In the case of my Olds, it was a perfect subject- metal hard as Hades, no engraving, and I just saw the dragon stretched out on the metal. I was only lucky enough to find an engraver, who, sadly, seems to have disappeared. I wish him well, he was an artist of the highest level.
