Recordings of orchestras often don't list who is playing. In fact, I own no recordings of orchestras that do list the players. So how is it that some of you seem to know who played on what?
I do own a copy of "Pictures At An Exhibition" performed by the Chicago Symphony. The liner notes do not mention Bud Herseth or any other brass player.
Of course we know who was in all chairs in the orchestra at the time. But who played the gig?
There are no credits. So how do we know who plays on these symphony dates?

This is an interesting question. Many times everyone assumes that the principal player of "Orchestra X" is playing the 1st Trumpet part on all of their recordings but that may not always be the case. In the April 1977 "Instrumentalist" magazine interview Bud Herseth says that he played first on all CSO recordings from 1948-1977, except for one section of the Solti recording of the Schoenberg Variations which was played by William Scarlett. The program also included the Brandenburg and Tchaik 5 that week, so Bud didn't play all of the Schoenberg. Mr. Scarlett is also playing 1st on a recording of Rimsky-Korsakov's "Antar" Symphony with Morton Gould conducting. All other CSO recordings from those years are Bud.

Of course after 1977 we don't really know. I had heard in the past the the 1980 Solti Pictures recording was Mr. Scarlett. Also, I've always had a suspicion that it might not be Bud on the Boulez recording of the Firebird. Does anyone have more info about these recordings?

JU

I heard that on the CSO/Solti recording of Pictures and Bartok CFO, Bud is playing first on Pictures and Scarlett plays first on the Bartok. This is because the CSO had just come off of a European tour where one of the programs included Pictures, Bartok CFO and Bruckner 7 (or some other ridiculous combination). They recorded Pictures and the Bartok when they got back to Chicago.

Does anyone have the Solti Bruckner 7 and can compare the date of the recording with this one? They may have been at the same time.
