Hello.
This must be a concern for many players who practice at home.
Any idea?

Get them free tickets for your concerts.
I have found that to be very effective in the past, especially when there have been local performances that are tailored towards younger audiences (they have a young daughter).
I have also helped their daughter with her keyboard playing (which is a serious laugh - my keyboard skills are slightly below that of an untrained monkey).

On of the big things that we have discussed is hours of practice - I won't practice too late into the evening on the understanding that they won't make noises (he is a carpenter and is often doing DIY) too early in the morning.

Practice indoors instead of in the ally.

See if they have moments when they are not at home, everybody needs to regularly go shopping, do the groceries, etc

Try to pick a time when the closest neighbours are not home.

I found that what irritates people the most is not playing music, it's the long tones and other exercises besides playing tunes. Try using a mute for those!

To keep neighbors happier I practice melodic things and keep scales, long tones, and "out" jazz stuff to a minimum. It's challanging enough.

I think of Bud Herseth's saying, "...never practice. Always PERFORM".

I think that was a reference to my trumpet playing

I heard from another thread on this site about the "silent brass system" I wonder if this will settle the noise pollution the neighbor's recieve. if one calls it polution.

I find myself in the same boat. I have had no complaints, but I am aware of the noise I may produce, and I am not the best player and I am trying to learn new things which sounds aweful to others... I'm gonna look into this product soon...other than that I'll go to the wharhouse down the street and practice...

I Would be wary of silent brass, the back pressure can really mess with your playing.

Not really. I love mine. The back pressure is negligable and with the headphones, it's like practicing without a mute. The best part is that I don't disturb the rest of the house while practicing.

So far I've got only one complaint and that was when I started practice on the morning of a public holiday. Funny thing was the person who came over to complain was living a few blocks away (how he found my apartment is still a mystery to me). Anyway from then on I try not to practise at home on public holidays.

Generally, weekdays are pretty safe to practise because most of the people in my neighbourhood are usually out for work.

I only practice between noon and 8:00pm. If anyone complains, too bad, I need to practice. Most people are pretty sympathetic towards musicians though.

The silent brass system is alright. If you use it too much you'll sound like a latin player. If that's what you're going for, great. If not, don't spend too much time on it. I always noticed a delay in the sound with the silent brass. When I was playing fast passages it would throw me off. I ended up blowing the mic out of mine so I just chucked it.

Borrowed my dads silent brass, there's a delay which is so flipping annoying. Its like playing organ, on trumpet... oh you know what I mean! Besides the cheaper alternative to silent brass is to stick in a harmon, take the tube out and just blow your ruddy balls off to your hearts' content. Thats my practicing method anyway. Probably why I'm such an under acheiver!

Alternatively, bugger em... just play loud and proud during daylight hours (dunno if its the same in the US or where ever you're from) but in the UK "sound pollution" is only relevant at anti-social hours.

Hi, Jay.

If your neighbor offends you, buy his child a drum!

Oh, the blessing of music appreciation!

Best wishes!

+1 Practice mutes in general are a short term solution and shouldn't be used all of the time.
