Yeah, those Maynard 70s bands were great. But you know, if you really want to get your butt kicked by some great Maynard vintage stuff you have to go back a little further to some of those live performances in the 1960s when he was doing college dance dates with his band and had little known trumpet players in his band like Bill Chase and Don Ellis. Damn...sometimes it's good to be older.

here is a good one..

I had a couple of boxes of ablums given to me to "hold" for my brother because the airforce moves him around a lot... it is my uncles collection and his combined, there are lot's of maynard ablums - I went out and bought a record player just to hear all those old ablums... that was the best money I spent in a long time..

I've been thinking about Maynard. Two things.

One.
I noticed on ITG that his band is making a pass thru CA in Jan.26,27&28 '03. IIRC
I've decided to go see him two nights in a row. Hemet High School and Yucaipa High School. IIRC.
Very close to my home.

Two.
I'm thinking about asking Jeff Helgesen to do a Maynard solo transcription. There is one off of MF 3 that I can't get out of my head. He already did a Chase for me THIS year so I'll have to wait until next year to impose on him.

Too bad TH never got an events/calender page up and going.

Where's Hemet High? Isn't that in Santa Cruz? If so, I might go.

why don't we pick one of these venues, and meet each other before and/or after the show?

What do you guys say?

It might be fun to put some faces to the names on the Trumpet Herald.

Maynard has had a tremndous influence on american music for the last 30 years. His playing especially in the 70's impacted a whole generation of players. (Some band directors might say ruined). This was his most popular era. I loved the music and the sound of his band but he was much better as player in his earlier years. Listen to the recordings and I think you will agree.
Bud Herseth, who is also one of the best players ever, once called Maynard the best brass player of our generation. Considering the variety of instruments that Maynard used to play it isn't surprising.

Is Maynard the best player ever. No, I don't think so! His range and power was/is exciting. While Faddis is a terrific player and the opening to "Into the Faddisphere", may be the most exciting 32 second opening to a tune I have ever heard I don't think he is the best player. There is such a variety of players that could claim to be the best. This includes Raphael Mendez, Maurice Andre and others.

If I had to vote on one player today I would have to say Arturo Sandoval. I have heard him do some things that I have never have heard anyone do before. Besides he won the high note battle with Faddis - that is partially available to watch on Trumpetstuff.com.

But, there are many players that are good at so many different things. The best ever is a difficult thing to determine.

Well, there are two things that Maynard has going for him. First, you can tell if it is Maynard even if you hear a snippit of sound and there is something that sends shivers up my spine when he goes into the stratosphere. I think I will go listen to some records.

Mike Ackerman
Atlanta, GA.

Some of the "early days" have been released on such CDs as "Best of Stan Kenton" and similar. I have a couple. His sound is distinctive and quite recognizable even back then -- he's still more a soloist than a lead player on the ones I have. And, man, are there some hot players in the bands!

EBjazz,

I think Jan 25 at Millbrae H.S. is closest to you (and me-near SF Airport). He played there about 3 years ago when my daughter was first chair trumpet there. He was impressed with her abilities and she was thrilled to have him talk to her about it. I plan to go see him this time around.

But, his low register on "Danny Boy" is stunning.

Oh. Heh, sorry. Stan Mark is a great player himself. You can forget my last post then...But Maynard is a great player, and a very inspirational one as well.

Why did you have to come in here and beat up on Maynard?

All we wanted to do was reflect back on the Stan Mark days. Long hair, afros and Dbl high C's.

MF 3, Nice and Juicy, Live at Jimmi's and Mac park.

Jesus H christ!

I have never had a musical rush or had a chill go up my spine like when I have heard Maynard play a particular tune or passage. Besides his range, his playing is expressive, emotional, and has this sort of nostalgic feeling to it that touches me. Regarding small groups, one of my favorite performances is when Maynard sat in with Clifford Brown's group in N.Y.C. I have been fortunate to spend time with Maynard over the years and he's just a really nice man that has as much love and enjoyment playing now as ever.

Maynard recently came out to Australia and I saw one of the greatest shows I have ever seen!

After the obligatory "Ladies and Gentlemen, Mr Maynard Ferguson..." he came out and blew about 4 bars of VERY loud VERY high stuff. My friend (who is also a trumpet player) turned to me and said "I could go home now and be happy" and I knew exactly how he felt.

I'm glad we stayed for the rest of the gig - what a band! Great Band, great arrangements and great line up - rhythm section, alto and tenor saxes, one trombone and 3 trumpets - plus Maynard. Sounds like a well balanced band to me

Our very own Aussie boy, James Morrison got up and blew a solo too and I gained a whole new level of respect for the man.

If you get the chance to go see MF and his band, please GO.

Brendan.
