Rafael Mendez Volume 1 and Trumpet Magic of Rafael Mendez are both pretty decent. You can order almost any of his recordings from Summit Music. |

Hi pedaltonekid,
I was just wondering when you said those two CDs are pretty decent. Are you talking about his playing or the quality of the CD?
In my opinion the man can just flat play.
Curious Me,

All his recordings are well worth having!
Have a look at http://www.songsearch.net -- they have 14 of his CD's. |

I think Mendez is one of the all time greats. A great technician, especially in the areas of breathing, fingering, and articulation. I liked his rendition of "Moto Perpetuo."
He was one of the first players that I listened to who caused me to realize what a truly outstanding player could do, and just how much hard work would be necessary to achieve excellence on the trumpet. |

I was referring generally to his playing. The quality of the CD is very good, but you can tell that the recordings were made with older equipment. None the less, very enjoyable. |

Go to http://www.trumpetstuff.com/images/Mendez/
There, you can hear Mendez play Moto Perpetuo, 4.5 minutes, and hear double tonguing and circular breathing at its finest, IMO.
He makes the entire thing sound like one breath!
Beautiful, clean technique and excellent classical tone.
Bear in mind that this was recorded quite a while ago - I remember having the album this was on back in 1965 - so it was recorded before that.
Give it a listen if you can. I have the basic Real Player and downloaded it there. |
