I get those states messed up all the time!
I don't have the Selmer anymore, just a CT olds (WOOWOWOW) and a Cousnenon that came from Doc's personal collection.
Maybe I'll see you up at UNH? I can't wait to see CT again, it's been way too long.

I saw Mr. Terry play in NYC a couple of years ago and posted a similar thread afterwards. Some answers and pictures might still be of interest:

Clark Terry's trumpet was actually the same model that Miles Davis played later in his career. I built at least four of these for Miles Davis and at least two for Clark Terry when I was with the Martin Co. in Kenosha Wisconsin. I may be mistaken, but as I recall I think the last one for Clark Terry may have been a gift from Wallace Roney. This model eventually became a production model called the ST3460 which is no longer in production. |

I lived in NH & never knew about CTs appearances until after I left. Almost unvariadbly the videos I saw of him playing FH, had that Martin diamond emblem (unless olds had it too). Besides the V cup being a bit revalotory info, can anyone here let me know the bore & bell specs of his FHs.
(Edit) looks like .460" on the ST3460 right? |

I think for the latter part of his career he played and endorsed an Olds Clark Terry model Flugel. The 1977 Olds Catalog features the L-13T Custom "Clark Terry" Flugelhorn, which he helped Olds develop and played. If he switched to something else later, I am unaware of this, although certainly his endorsement deals with Olds, if any, perished when the company shut down. I do see a 2004 picture of him playing the Olds Clark Terry model with his NYT obit. If he hadn't changed between 1979, when Olds closed, and 2004, I doubt he had a lot of reason to do so afterwards.
The list of player/horn combinations on O.J.'s trumpet page lists a Selmer flugel prior to the Olds, but nothing later. He played both a Giardinelli 7FL mouthpiece and a Giardinelli CT-1 (CT=Clark Terry) mpc on flugel, according to that page. _________________ royjohn

Love Clark Terry.
Anyone know why he played mostly Flugelhorn and Trumpet the least?
Was it not many others doing it; easier to play or something else..?
Thanks. |

CT played a lot on his trumpet, more in his earlier days all the same. He sounded incredible playing lead as well as jazz. A remarkable musician!!
He never switched to flugelhorn, he just played it more after about the 50s because he probably just liked the sound.
Not many others doing it? Well depends on what era you talk about. It is said that before miles recorded on flugelhorn for sketches, that he had met CT and Clark was playing flugelhorn and the sound inspired miles to record on it. Miles got a lot of credit for making the flugelhorn popular, but it was likely CTs doing. Funny that miles moved away from it. Probably because it became popular...
Some things on flugelhorn are easier, some are harder, but a musician like CT wouldn't switch horns because one was easier... It would be a musical decision. He had basically a perfect embouchure. I think he could have played a baritone horn and made it sound good!!
Best,

Does anyone know what size Selmers CT played on? I am curious if he was on the larger or smaller ones ….. and I assume his Committee in the 50s was a #2?
Many thanks in advance —
