I always loved the Thorvald Hansen Sonata. Hardenberger has a nice recording. Hansen also has another solo trumpet piece called "Romance & Scherzo" which is fun to play. Sheet music here: http://imslp.org/wiki/Category:Hansen,_Thorvald |

My teen son is doing a recital next weekend that's being put on by his private teacher. The teacher knowing that I was a player has asked me to play a piece. I'm in my 50's and I've NEVER played a solo recital. Yikes. The only thing I've sort of got worked up is Charlier #1. I really enjoy playing that one even though I have a really hard time keeping the tempo down to where I can execute it with a minimum of clams.
I briefly considered trying just a few variations of the Paganini Caprice no. 24 which I LOVE,...then I came to my senses. Someday. _________________ "I'm an engineer, which means I think I know a whole bunch of stuff I really don't."

I like Brandt. Its strange that not one other poster said Brandt. Did Brandt go out of fashion? I remember playing the Brandt book with Mario Guarneri, Rolf Smedvig, Adel Sanchez, a long time ago. Maybe articulation went out of fashion. |

I love these threads, all why I come to this site. For me, a struggling comebacker.

I like Brandt too. I've been playing a rotation of material from Brandt, Wurm, Goldman, Sachse, Werner and Bousquet this summer to gradually build up strength for this season. I've also been mixing in some easier melodic etudes from Duhem and Franquin to focus on playing with ease and efficiency. _________________ Bb Yamaha Xeno 8335IIS

Ballads! Who doesn't love playing a great ballad?
Articulation, you say? Brandt has been a part of my daily maintenance since discovering the teachings of Doc Reinhardt. Not sure it's what I'd want to perform though. I do recall hearing Bill Adam play Charlier - if you can make it sound like THAT you'll wow any audience! |

Russian Studies
A lot like the Brandt book:

I love playing from "The Well-Tempered Player" by Ernest Piper. Some fun Bach arranged for trumpet. |

I like Brandt as well (had my copy since the mid 80s), but I've never had someone listening say, "Wow, that's gorgeous," like seems to happen on occasion when playing Charlier or sometimes Bousquet. _________________ My Gear |
