Rather trollish topic, to be sure. Best to let it quietly fade away...imo.

Lara - Don't let words on an internet forum bother you one bit. I've always thought forums were a bit like gold mining. There are some amazing riches to be found, but you have to sift through a lot of debris to find them.

People,

Many of you said the same thing over and over again: "it's about the 'ethics' comment, and not ____________". I seriously doubt many people even read through a damn thread before posting their own response. To make TH a little less mundane when it comes to repetition, make sure you're not just posting something to up your numbers.

I don't get the "screen-name" deal ....

What is there to hide from, or why all the secrecy? In the "witness protection program"?

I suppose some do it (screen-names) as they think of themselves in some "cutesy"- alter ego fashion (?).

Grow up, all.

Was out on East-end of Long Island (some here object to my referencing "The Hamptons", so I won't say that ... not).

I'm back (in Maryland).

I don't have a laptop (nor "notebook"-computer), so I had to use local library (Bridgehampton) for internet access.

Funny thing -- while registering for a computer, I met this 6ft + Black babe, with a totally bald (shaven) head. Turns out she plays Trumpet, and is looking for one. Seems someone ripped-off her old Getzen, and the valves (only!) from her vintage F. Besson (Paris).

I'm going back (L.I.) next week. Will bring along a few horns for her to try. She's ready to buy something.

Did I miss much when I was away? I did peruse the forum briefly, from the library there in Bridgehampton.

I was in the library's "children's section" (replete with little chairs and very low desks ... with computers), as the "regular" (adults) computer area was being repaired, due to a roof leak.

This library draws "famous" locals. That moron, Alec Baldwin, is giving a movie review and showing there next week. He was a former neighbor of mine, while married (him, not me) to Kim Basinger. They fought a lot. He's a total jerk. I might show up at his "talk" and challenge his moronic liberal views. (He swore he was going to move out of the country, if Bush won the last election. Too bad he can't keep promises).

Yf fthfl Srvnt,
Robt

When I first started reading this thread I immediately thought, “Oh, oh, here it comes.” When I saw mention of the THer’s name, I became very disappointed. I knew that there would be an outcry from many who are fans of the manufacturer and of Lara’s. The poster had every right to sell his horn for whatever he wanted to. I saw the listing and thought that it was obviously a great deal. I just don’t have $1,000.00 to spend on a horn right now. Whoever picked it up got a steal on a horn. What does it say about a person who is able to throw away a minimum of $1500.00 (and most likely a bit more) to make a point. Maybe he has more courage than most of us, I don’t know.

We all are looking for a horn that makes the work of playing a horn more enjoyable. We all know that there are a seemingly endless number of things we think about when we perform. I think about:

1. How much rest have I had before a performance?
2. How hot will it be at this gig?
3. Will I be able to remain well hydrated?
4. Will the monitor’ set so that I can hear myself?
5. Has it been long enough since I last took pain meds that my lips will respond properly?

Not to mention – hold in the corners, stop using too much pressure, think eee going up (or is it ahhhh or ooooh?), pivot or don’t – whatever, you get my drift. I don’t expect every horn to work for me. I’ve played enough horns to know that I don’t like them all. Many of those that I did not like cost much more than those I currently play. It’s not the horn’s fault. It’s not the manufacturer’s fault either. It’s not anyone’s fault. With all of the variables in horns and players – we have to play a lot of horns to find a good match. Because one Eclipse horn didn’t play well for this poster is not reason to condemn the entire line. That’s why there are so many different options available.

When the poster calls out Lara, I became a bit angry. This individual has never done anything on this board to intentionally hurt or anger anyone. Never. She was just the person who won the contest a couple of years ago. She has never held herself out as some sort of Eclipse artist. Eclipse has never put her into that position. I think that it is an incredibly generous thing that Eclipse trumpets does in giving away a horn for the past few years. None of the contest winners travels with the Eclipse booth to trade shows or is shown on their website as endorsing artists on the likes of Yamaha (insert your favorite brand here) artists. What a great thing that an individual who perhaps does not perform in the major concert halls has the opportunity to win a professional quality instrument. What great motivation it would be to help ease the drudgery of the hours of practice time this instrument requires of us.

I found responses in defense of the original poster’s comments curious. Why is it that we can so readily infer one thing when it benefits our argument and discount another’s inference as illogical? I don’t worry about Eclipse so much. These are big boys who can defend themselves. They’ll sell horns and those players associated with them will let their playing speak for them. When a young person who has done nothing wrong is singled out and perhaps made to feel bad about what must have been a very enjoyable experience – I think we do have responsibility to speak up.

Don’t let this poster tarnish your Star, Lara.

Regards,
Mario Atencio

I didn't even read all of this. Reminds me of the Martin (guitar) bashers at some forums I visit.

I typed up a big post and I deleted it. How I love to unsay words before I say them and regret them

Back on subject though:

Boyd, I really would appreciate an apology. My trumpet playing isn't supposed to impress anyone. It's what I do because I like to play music. It's my escape from the rest of the world when I just can't take it anymore. It may be a bit selfish, but that's what music is for me. It's my hobby and one of my passions. Just because I'm not going 'big time' or trying to use music as a way to earn my daily bread doesn't mean that I'm any less deserving of a nice instrument.

Thanks,
Lara

From my talking with her, what she says here is true. She is not trying to be a big Eclipse promo. She's excited about being given a free horn, she realy likes it, and like anyone else, she has the right to let other people know that she likes it or dislikes it. Never once has she said she's a great trumpet player. She's very humble, and she does not have a free ride into whereer she wants. I was just talking to her the other dweek about the different possiblities for getting into a college using such options like Co-op, work-study, the army (our least favorite at all). She may be a good promo for Eclipse horns, but she is not saying Eclipse are "the horn for eeryone" se's just saying it seems to be "the horn for her" and I'm sure she'll agree that she could be wrong. She is not apro, she has not been able to try eery kind of horn she wanted. This is just what she likes the best so far. So, in all truth, please do not invole Lara in the quality Eclipse hporns. They are not trying to scam anyone, the are trying to make great horns, and their horns are not for everyone, obviously. You didn't like it, oh well. People should not bash you for not liking it, and you shouldn't bash Eclipse for not liking Mr. McKinney's (spelling?) horn.

To everyone else, if he doesn't like the horn and wants to sell it for $1000, that's his choice. If he ave it away for free, he would be known as very generous. If he sold it for $2000-3000, He would be accepted as normal. So why is it, when he sells it for $1000, he suddenly seems to be bashing Eclipse?

Yet another way to up one's numbers is to quote your already off topic post with yet another off topic post.

Now back to our regularly scheduled thread.

(No, this isn't an accidental double post. I just tried to make the irony more apparent, since the point seemed to have been missed in a prior attempt. I regret not having a larger font to use, since everyone seems to be in competition for who can search for self-satisfaction by thinking they did the best job replying, even if they're repeated what someone else already said.)

If that comment about typing/spelling was directed at me (which I am sure it was so why am I even asking?), I must apologize. My keyboard is broken. I am using a very old keyboard I found in our house that is better than the broken one of my terrible, decrepit laptop. Especially if any V's were missing, because that key and the spacebar especially hate me. So I am sorry for my bad typing (not spelling because that is not necessarily too bad).

Oh, I get it. Slamming someone on their spelling has something to do with ethics.

If you were referring to the gratuitous reposting of your sermon lecturing people, we got it the first time.

Sorry, copying your own lecture about upping thread count just begs for someone to comment, after they finish laughing at the pomposity. ...and I am not shy.

Sorry RB, et al. I have deleted many comments on this thread without posting them. Mostly due to someone else having said it better. Some simply because the posts wouldn't have changed anyone's mind. Some because they weren't worth posting.

Perhaps I should have deleted more.

LR: *apology accepted with a smile* you're a cool dude, you know that? Not many people here are willing to apologize in public for what they have said or done. So thanks!
