Which is more commonly used by lead players in big bands?

Does it depend on the style or era of the piece? Which do you find easier? (presuming you can do both!)

I notice that Maynard uses lip trills a lot, even in a relatively low register. On the other hand, when playing with the United Nations Orchestra at the RFH, Arturo plays what must be the biggest shake I've ever heard!

lip trills (no valvues) vs. shaking the hron just plain sound cleaner and those that can do it have alot more control!

Agreed, lip trills make the piece. There are however some pieces that call for shakes. There is a section in "Rogers Hard Driving Groove" where the entire trumpet section does a shake on a high D. If done well it comes across great. If not done well, you sound like a bunch of horses neighing.
