I heard (from a VERY reputable source), that Lynn got involved in motion pictures as a camera operator. He was quite a player at that young age, wasn't he?

Great stuff Roddy, thanks!!! Any idea where Lyn is playing now? Newer recordings I might get my hands on... That guy was amazing and I assume still is. I would love to hear him again.

Lynn lived and worked in the showbands of Las Vegas for a while. He's a fine player.

Man, that cat was screamin!!!! Funniest thing is that other than his hair going white, he looks almost the same as he did way back when.

Check out that grip... he's definetly a player that uses very little pressure.

All this Maynard talk got me wantin to play some... so I whipped out WHat's New to beat my chops into submission and I just realized... it's really hard to tongue cleanly on a high A.....

He was awesome, its nice to see that Maynard didn't take all the credit, giving solos to others, even other trumpet players.

I was just in Vegas a few months ago hanging out with Lyn, and he still sounds and plays on another planet, unbelievable chops, just awesome! He has not been gigging actively for a while, been running his own company where he invented some super steady cam device for motion pictures and TV, but seems to be getting the bug again I think and working on a new project or recording that I hope he will release sometime soon. For those of you who remember seeing him live, EVERYONE rightfully was calling him the next Maynard... He still sounds like that! I am trying to get him lined up to play at my jazz festival sometime. You have to check out the clips of him at http://www.trumpetstuff.com

Saw Lynn in concert right as he was getting on the Maynard band in 74 or 74. He's a really little guy physically. So I suppose high notes aren't necessarily the domain of large muscular types.

Lynn is now playing a Getzen Eterna in silver. It's shown on the picture from Roddy.

Holton ST306 MF is still Lynn's favorite horn and horn of choice.

The Getzen may be in a picture that Roddy has, but Lynns favorite horn is still his ST306 Holton Maynard Ferguson trumpet, the one he played almost exclusively his entire career. He loves that Holton, and wails on it... He has the biggest sound and most incredible tone on that thing, just amazing!

I too saw Nicholson with Maynard in the 70s. What a player! Did you notice that he is blowing a Getzen Eterna in the photograph?

Lynn didn't play a ST306 with MF but a ST302!!! (the ST302 is the lightweight version of the ST306, but the same bore - 0.468")

Indeed. That's a rather unique grip... Dave Stahl is another player using it and I started using it here a few years ago. Not to turn this into a big this-grip that-grip thing but I really encourage guys to try it. Really limits the amount of pressure you can use and helped me a great deal with my stamina. Once you get past the fear of dropping the darn horn it really works well at keeping pressure off the top lip.... for me anyways.
