I'm having a hard time with practice. With 3 kids, a full time job plus running a small business, the only time I have to practice is early morning while ev'one is still asleep or at night after the kids are asleep. So I have to practice quietly. What is the best mute I can use and still make the most out of my Caruso calisthenics?
Thanks,

Well Dave;
you have same problem like me. I have hunted the best practice mute and my best experiences are from the followings. Tom Crown new practice mute its very centered and doesn't affect the pitch but foe me its a little bit hard to play,but the best I have try. I like but it gets a 8.75 in the 10 scale. Harmon wah wah. its more open. Renuzit home made mute, Thats the cheapest way but the pitch is some high, Denis Wick cup mute ( the black one ) same as other but weights a little. and the Windy city black and small practice mute. Its very lightweight the sound its fine but more thigh to blow. Thats my impressions. Well nothing substitute the open practice, Begin with the renuzit mute you can craft one with a couple dollars or with a harmon wah wah that its very easy to get. If you can try Tom Crown give a try. For me its fine
Thanks
Felix.

Here's a great practice mute. It's rather expensive, but if you can afford it, it's worth it. Laurie Frink recommended this mute to me, so there's your Carmine Caruso connection.

I only have time to practice late in the evenings after my toddler has gone to bed. I have found the Yamaha Silent Brass system to work the best when it is used properly with the electronics. What I like is that you hear something relative to your own sound. Once you get the volume adjusted properly you do not notice the back pressure either. I have also used the Dennis Wick, but the silent brass works best for me. |

I've got a Yamaha Silent Brass system, but prefer my Mannie Klein Sh! Sh! Practice Mute, which cuts the sound pretty good.

Denis Wick or Brass Spa, both great practice mutes. Quiet as a mouse. _________________ 1972 Selmer Radial |

I use the Trumcor Lyric Stealth mute. Its the best in least resistance and the intonation is good. If you go in a room and close the door, you will be as quiet as a mouse. My wife is the biggest endorser of this product.
Use this puppy on your lunch break for a little extra time.

The Brass Spa practice mute is very helpfull. What I like about it is that it doesn't mess up your chops like some other mutes. But it is no pleasure listening to it.
I would go back and forth between a practice mute and the Yamaha silent brass. At least with the silent brass you will receive some enjoyment from hearing a real trumpet sound. |

Thanks for the many responses. It looks like I have a few more options than I would have guessed. Thanks for the input.
