I've started and have been practicing with a Bach 7c MP but goofing around one day I picked up a 5c MP. It felt a lot more comfortable, I found my lip position quickly and the notes seemed to be easier to hit. Is this unusual, or should I stick with my 7c, reagardless of feel.
Just to verify this, I went back today and had the same results.

Hi George,
You should go with what works best for you. A 7C is a decent enough beginners mp (that's why they're included with most new horns, at least the Bach's). As you progress in your playing skills, you might switch mps multiple times or you might find that the 5C works best for you. FWIW - I started out using a 5C then switched to a 10 1/2 C, then to a JetTone, then to a Schilke 13A4A with a Purviance 10 tossed in there a couple of times as a test.
Have fun and good luck with your endeavor. I think you'll find it a difficult but very rewarding journey. _________________ Terry Rodecker

George,
I just checked the Kanstul Mouthpiece comparator. The Bach 5C as I remember it had a comfortable rim. I played it in High School. I have never felt that the newer 7C mouthpiece rim wascomfortable, and I don't see many players using these. The Mt. Vernon 7C on the other hand is a much better feel, if you can get one. The small letter 5C and 3C Bach pieces are the more popular pieces, IMHO because of the rim contour and comfort.
