Sorry for the long delay, I just noticed this thread.
I alternate through 3, 3a, and 3b depending on how much time I've got and what I feel like doing in a particular day. (The directive I have from my teacher is to use all three of them.) I like 3a and 3b because they ultimately connect my entire range, from pedal C to whatever my top note is that day. _________________ Steve Thiel |

In an interview I read with Hakan Hardenberger he says to use 3B when you are tense and need to relax:
"It develops the dark side of your sound. When you work with the sixth as an interval you have to keep down. I use this one when I have played a lot of piccolo trumpet."
