This link is an excerpt from the film ‘Brassed off’ which is a fictional tale of the trials and tribulations of the Grimley Mining community. The film draws heavily on social upheaval of the British coal field communities in the wake of devastating pit closures during the 1980’s in the UK.
All the musical pieces in the film are played by the Grimethorpe Colliery Brass band.
This musical excerpt is Rodrigo’s Concerto De Aranjuez. The Flugelhorn solo is played by a fine cornet player by the name of Paul Hughes who was a member of the Grimrthorpe Brass band at that time and is now principal cornet with the ‘Beaumaris Brass band’
A great piece of work by Paul and his fellow band members.

Chris,
Thanks for the post. I've never heard of this film until now. (How have I missed it??) I also watched the William Tell Overture clip from the same film. I think that performance is even better.
Thanks to Netflix I should be watching the whole film soon.

Wow, Paul is SMOKIN' HOT.
Seriously, that's a cool looking flug. Is it a British horn? _________________ Doug Walsdorf

I agree it would sound great on a flugel, but my ears tell me the guy playing the track for the movie was using a cornet. Just seemed odd to me that they wouldn't change either the dialogue or the instrument to match what's actually being heard.
Maybe there's something to the story that demanded it. Could be like the famous 'bugle' solo Montgomery Clift played in 'From Here to Eternity,' which was actually played on a trumpet dubbed in. I think Harry James played it, but I haven't found verification. _________________ Jim Hatfield

The piece is really hard to find and expensive when you do. There's a publisher in the Netherlands that has it for flugel and brass band for around $160 USD.
Another solution for anyone that wants to play it a-cappella is simply transcribe it straight to your horn. Besides the movie version, there's a good performance by Rex Richardson on YouTube. _________________ Jim Hatfield
the solo was played on a flugel - i think youtube may be distorting it somewhat.
the arrangement used is actually illegal because the Rodrigo estate objected to the piece being rearranged, so is not available at any price (although many brass bands in the UK have access to photocopies).

Gee, you mean that really wasn't Tara playing that?
Brassed Off is a nice watch and listen, if you haven't seen it. They run it on Starz and I think the Sundance channel.

Is this really true?

The piece has been recorded by Jens Lindemann (Rising Sun) and the London Trumpet Sound (Vol 1). I heard Allen Vizzutti play it with piano at a recent recital and Alison Balsom performed it about two weeks ago on A Prairie Home Companion.
I found that arrangements of the piece for instruments besides the guitar are hard to come by. I was simply going to transcribe the guitar part. I was planning on playing it at a recital this summer - (My wife loves it!)
Given the relative high profile of this piece in the brass world, the Rodrigo estate must not be too happy.

Use of SheetMusicDirect requires installation of Sibelius Scorch. It's free and the site helps you through the install. When you get ready to print, be sure to hit the icon above the music and not your usual printing protocol.
The song is a fake book version, inluding chord changes, in the Key of C. By listening carefully to the various recordings of "Concierto de Aranjuez" it would be easy to work up a very close, if not transcription accurate, rendition to play.

Along with my interest in music when I was much younger I played and coached college football. I have that soundtrack from the movie and as coaches we would say that the music, "kicks ass and takes telephone numbers." Not much more to say than it is just fantastic. _________________ "There are two sides to a trumpeter's personality,
