Each one of us has a built in metronome, our brain.
Think of the action of breathing. I use mouthfuls of air.
Yes, I am not one of the big breath advocates.
Think about that first note. Without the horn concentrate of the action of taking a breath and silently say they.
Now in time take your mouthpiece and do this.
With no hesitation, breathe, play. Take a mouthful of air and play.
One, two, three, four, breath play.
Tongue quickly! Think of a reptile striking.
Breath, play.
Sounds a bit odd, but it works for me, from the bottom of the horn to the top.
Mouthful of air.

So, the metronome is now giving you the "push" you need... Fine! You can keep using it to help improve, but perhaps you can also try other things. Try something else, and make IT your "push". For example, tap your foot -- loudly! -- and use that to set your timing. Then, tap softly, and start thinking "1-2-3-4" or whatever in your head. You should gradually internalize your metronome, as WiseOne2 so aptly notes.

This is a problem that i have. i call it a "delay of play." It might make me delay from having the note come out.

~this is a story that one of my instructors told me~
you know when you see a snake that throws his head forward, then whips it back again? thats what you have to do with your tongue. it has to be very fast, and your fingers must be alligned with your tongue. when you tongue a note, you must also slam the valves down, so that they are in sync.

he is a very brught man, i just cant remember his exact words.

i hope i helped
