Before his site vanished his bio claimed he played keyboard for the Tokens from 1980-85. Must've been one of those reunion tours.

That's very interesting because I sang lead with the Tokens AND I did all the solos on Maynard's Conquistador.

Here is a link to 3 excerpts. One is of the cut I mentioned, the other 2 are the ending of the Theme From Star Trek. I did not identify which clip came from George's cd or Maynard's cd. See if you notice a difference.

(I will leave them up for a short period)

"Java" was never in question. That relatively simple tune is likely played by GS.

If the clips don't match, you must attach! (huh?)

It proves he sent OJ two obviously different clips, that Staerkel sounds nothing like Al Hirt, and that MikeyMike does a great pirate impression.

I'd be curious to hear the original albums against the CDs GS was selling, but alas, we can't seem to order them.

EDIT: Thanks 2-5-1, I just checked out the 3 clips. I think the jury is returning...

Check out Equally Well Temepered's post. He posted a clip from Starkel's cd, and a clip from Maynard. Check it out for yourself, they seem pretty identical to me.

Or maybe he just lived at the corner of Lawrence and University.

Yeah, you don't even have to think about it while you're listening: it's that cut-and-dried!

Staerkel sent me one clip - his own version of Java (probably from the CD). The other clip, I ripped from my own Al Hirt CD.

Dave, I did not notice that the Java song not was questioned. My reason to ask for that one, was that I have been experimenting with trying to get close to Al Hirt's sound. I used a lot of different mouthpieces since I think that is more important than for instance to have the same trumpet as Hirt had (like a Martin Comittee, LeBlanc, King Silver Sonic, Courtois 708 Sonic).

One thing is to get close to the Al Hirt sound. Another thing is to match him when playing - that is no easy task

The same goes for Maynard and Doc (or for Dave Hickman).

Ole

This sums-up this thread rather nicely, I think.

I knew it was pointless to specify which example was from g.s' cd, but his was example 1a (and of course the cut). I put 2 more clips off the Extravaganza cd....sounds like Doc alright. In fact, the excerpt from "A Song For You" is taken from Docs LP "Rhapsody For Now"...and you can actually hear the LP static noise. I don't see any point in putting more clips up after these, as I think it is pretty cut-and-dry.
