Wow, went to the repair shop today to collect my overhauled Olds Studio and ended up testing out a brand new line of trumpets due to be launched at the Frankfurt Music Fair next week.
The ‘Eclipse’ is built in England by a small company who already are involved parts of the production process of a couple of other well known British horns. All of the Eclipse models are a medium large bore and they were great to play. Tested them using my Monette B4 and they have a great warm tone in the mid range but can certainly cut it up high to. Slotting was excellent. Tested the gold plate, silver plate, red brass bell and custom coloured horns and enjoyed them enormously.
One of the oddest things about them was the main tuning slide. I couldn’t find it at first!!! The leadpipe goes right around into the third valve, no tuning slide. The tuning is completed using the slide fitted on the exit pipe to the first valve (between first valve and the bell). Certainly gives the airflow a straight run though to the valve block. Never seen anything like it before.
These horns are to be targeted towards Pro level, not too sure on exact pricing but I think we are talking US 2500-3000. They tell me a web site is iminent after the Frankfurt show and I will post again when I know the address.
These guys are a great team and I wish them well in their venture, I was genuinely impressed with their product. Good luck Leigh and John. _________________ Eclipse XLR Scratch Gold

Tests caried out at First Class Brass in Dunstable UK, where they are manufactured. Fascinating time and somewhat priviliged as an amateur player to be one of a select few so far to have played these horns.

I played one at the Musikmesse in Frankfurt, and oh dear Lord...
...this thing is going to be big. One of the finest lead horns I have ever played, very bright, the sound has mass, and you can seriously hurt someone with this thing.
I want one. _________________ Gary A. Wilder |

smithwatkinsguy,
Spoke with the Eclipse guys today, lots of interest at their launch in Frankfurt including some US dealers. Hopefully you should be able to get your hands on one soon. I've asked them to put dealers on their website asap! |

I had the honor of playing this horn at the expo in Frankfurt, GE.
I'm buying one; and BTW if you live in Germany & want a Callet Superchops horn that's less than 8mo old & in stellar condition, give me a holler. _________________ Gary A. Wilder |

These things are dangerous, and I warn you to be careful with them. They're positively addictive. I have a medium red and now I want to add a medium Classic, the Equinox, a C trumpet, and a flugal to my collection. It is the very best trumpet I've ever played, and I never, never want to put it in it's case when the day is over. I just want to keep on playing. _________________ S. T.

Hi Guy's
Yes Eclipse trumpets have grown very well over the last 18 months or so, but you must remember that the horns were actually in research and development over 4 years ago.
Funny to see this thread on here again! it does bring back some memories of the time around our launch.
Back then we had put every last penny we had into our Bb's and were praying that we had done the right thing rather than simply stay as repairers forever.
Well i am very pleased to say that thanks to the wonderful players we have and the trumpet community recognising our horns as top level, we are here to stay for as long as you all put up with us.
The cornet is coming next year, and maybe?????? a picc the year after.
I must just mention someone involved with Eclipse that seldom gets the recognition for his amazing skills.
Gary Wilder or (Castle Bravo to some of you) has been around since the day of our launch in Frankfurt and is certainly one of our major assets.
His skills with web design simply amaze me! He is constantly looking for new and better ways to improve on his work, which is kinda like the way we try to run the Trumpet making part of the business too.
If you get time please take a look at his new screensaver on the Eclipse site www.eclipsetrumpets.com
He has taken a lot of time preparing things like this which are for you guy's mostly, plus he is doing all of this in the middle of a warzone in the Iraqi desert.
I hope that i can be one of the first to buy him a very very cold beer when he gets back.
To all the other people who have supported us, please accept my thanks.
And John "I told you so!!"
Regards
Leigh |

Just like to add my sincerest appreciation and thanks to Leigh and all at Eclipse for building such fine instruments. I received my new Red Flugel finished in Savannah last week and it is absolutely incredible in every respect.
Eclipse are amazing instruments - absolutely top notch, and Leigh and his team are great people too which makes the buying process even more enjoyable!
Congratulations on your success Eclipse and long may it continue.
Graham. |
