Composed by Edward Elgar (1857-1934) in 1901. The words were added a year later by Arthur Benson.
Performed by the BBC symphony orchestra. Sir Andrew Davis conducting.
Played every year at the Royal Albert Hall on ‘Last night of the Proms’
I’ve read it’s also played at graduation ceremonies in the USA.

I'd never heard the lyrics before. The trio section of this is some of the most familiar and recognized music heard in the USA. Just whistle the first few notes and you conjure up images and memories of graduation exercises from elementary school through college. It can be a chop-buster, since you must repeat it until all the candidates are seated. The opening section is unknown to everyone except those of us who play it in pops concerts, and even then, some of the other less familiar P & S marches are usually programmed. |

(I meant to say P & C) and the crowd reaction in that You Tube clip looks like an American pops concert performance of Stars And Stripes Forever. |

I have never in my life seen an American Orchestra concert attended like that. The closest thing that comes to mind is the Boston Pops on 4th of July on the River. _________________ Joe Petrocelli |

Being Anglophiles and Elgar fans, my wife and I have enjoyed what we can get over here on the Proms Concerts, especially the Last Night, and singing "Land of Hope and Glory", "Jerusalem", etc with the Brits. I first came in contact with the program with an LP of an early 80's program by Sir Colin Davis and since have a cassette of the 61 proms have seen snippets on TV from time to time and Public Radio, and now the internet. Of course, played for our High School graduations, like many still do, but dignified graduation ceremonies seem few and far between today. _________________ Dave Rafferty Devillier Stencil (German) Besson 609
