I see you guys talking about them, and it's obvious from context they're low...

How low?

Thanks!

Anything lower than your horn is physically built for!

Check it out here - there's even a movie of a guy playing them.

http://www.geocities.com/BourbonStreet/3319/pedal.htm

For someone who has never played them, you have to think outside of the box.

Someone here says, " The notes are in the horn..."

When I play them I use the fingerings from low c to low F#/Gb

Wow! Thanks for the (very swift) responses.

They say the only stupid question is the one you don't ask. I was kind of embarrassed to ask that, but now I know.

Itward - I have some excellent pedal tone exercises I will share with you if you like. Just send me your snail mail particulars.

Pedal tones are those one and two octaves below our low C (which on the piano is concert middle C). These tones are difficult to produce at first and require diligent practice. Eventually you will be able to produce in-tune tones down to double pedal C.

Pedal tones help to firm up the embouchure and to achieve the upper register tones more easily. They are great to play at first during warm-up and after practice at warm-down.
