Measure one of each line is to be done as lip bend. This will stimulate the correct air flow needed to successfully connect the G to the 4th, aug.4th, fifth, and aug. 5th in measures two and four.

What Jaimie said.
In addition, Roy Poper wrote: | The footnote "1" on line one means to fake using the valve by tapping the index finger on the right hand in time (as you would the valve) on the leadpipe when moving to the third space C, E, and G." |
Also, as I understand it, the lip bends should should be as quick as if you were using the valves. _________________ Steve Thiel |

Make sure they are always played with ease. There should be no force in the "bend" which is a bit of a misnomer because as mentioned it should simulate a valve movement and be quick. It shouldn't be smeared down to the pitch. The best exercise for this is on page 21 titled "Bending exercises." It could be a different page in newer books as mine is quite old. |
