You need a dub C to play music that calls for it.
If all you ever aspire to play is traditional jazz you probably don't need a high C. If you want to be featured on Maynard or Bill Chase charts, you need the dub C and beyond. The more you have in your arsenal, the more in-demand you'll be.
As others have said, don't fixate on range to the exclusion of all else. Sound and technical facility count for a lot. There are lots of examples of people who can play loud dub C's but overall don't sound particularly great. _________________ Getzen Eterna Severinsen

No. If you have a solid double G (4 ledger lines above the staff) you can handle 99.9999999% of anything written. Very few players have a solid double G, even those who claim to have range to double C. The key word is "solid" as in "never miss" and "clear, in tune and strong."
If you have a solid double A you are a monster high note player. _________________ HERMOKIWI |

Hopefully after 16 years the OP has resolved this. _________________ -Tom Hall-

Oops. I missed that. It's a good idea to check when the thread started before responding. I'll try to remember that. _________________ HERMOKIWI |

I just chuckled. The "C"s range from C1-C7 and that's all for the trumpet. Very few have EVER hit C7 and this guy was suggesting C8!!! If you learned that "high" C is dubba "C", you were taught wrong. It's sounds impressive, until you have to play it. High C is C5, dubba C ic C6. You can call C5 a quint C, but it's still C5.

It was to Uan Rasey. Range was the first thing he asked me. Once attained it makes the rest of your playing easier. Double C's are like belly buttons these days. It's what you do with them that's more important. |

Range was the LAST thing that Uan and I discussed. As in, it never came up. Sound was everything, and that eventually brings you where you want to go.
