Well, it's a week into the new semester, and after a month of relatively light playing it's back into the grinder. When I woke up this morning the muscles along my lower jaw were incredibly tight, much like your legs feel after the first day back running after a long layoff. I only had one rehearsal yesterday, Jazz, and didn't even feel tired at the end of it. And so I'm wondering as to the cause of this mysterious tightness, I abused myself all week, and it didn't manifest until this morning. Has anyone else encountered this, or even have any thoughts?

There is a phenomon called doms (delayed onset muscle soreness) that is typical for the condition that you described. When you are experiencing a very heavy demand on your playing it is essential to do a good warmup every day, and preferably do a nice warm down at the end of the day. A good warm down can consist of some soft pedal tones with lots of air, and/or some soft long tones in the lower register - below G, 2nd line. _________________ Best Regards, Play Well!! |
