I've been looking at several methods over the past few days. I'm trying to decide what to work onover the summer to get my chops in shape for tyring out for lead in our #1 band.

The thing I've noticed is the similarity in the wedge, Claude Gordon breathing method , and the stuff that Pops and Brisbois talk about. There is a connection to the wedge through Brisbois-Shew, but the CG I thougt aobut in the shower. CG wants you to concentrate on keeping your chest up. If you do this and really concentrate on it your stomach has an up and inward motion as you get to the end of your air. FUNKY HUH!! It's cool when you find out that maybe somethings you are doing aren't so funky after all!!!

Vessehune,

Right on, brother! I think you're on the right track - just make sure you include plenty of pencil exercises. I do them until I can't feel my corners anymore - "burn baby burn." But after about a week of recovery, my high "c's" project across Hershey Park like the "Shock and Awe" campaign in Iraq.

Good luck, brother!

WW

they are a lot the same in the stomach moving and making the lung capacity smaller thereby spinning the air

they are alittle different in some aspects

Brisbois also tightened the lower torso muscles as he went higher but was relaxed in the mid register

Shew uses the wedge basically always on (a difference from Brisbois)

Pops is more relaxed and doesn't use the lower torso muscles (obliques ect) nor does he pull in in the mid register

but yeah guys who can play high do a great many things the same way

yeah ps the pencil is da bomb

One of the many interesting things I heard Allen Vizzutti say yesterday was that according to friend of his (medical guy) who did a study out in LA, professional trumpet players inhale an average of 14 times more air than do amatures. He stressed (funny word here) the importance of being as relaxed as possible and letting the air and gravity do the work. Needless to say I was watching his breathing very closely last night as I heard his long, effortless (sounding) solos ranging from low Gs to double Gs, As and Cs. He never even broke a sweat!

Now I don't know about you guys, but if I just double or triple the volume of air I inhale before I play, its gonna feel like my air is "wedged" into my lunges!

PS. Since you asked I will oblige...You're Crazy!

quote from pushyred -- "...professional trumpet players inhale an average of 14 times more air than do amatures. "

14 TIMES or 14 percent? 14 times more is most likely more air than your lungs are capable of holding, but I'd believe the 14 percent.

Hey I'm pretty sure that's what he said...I was taking notes so I'll check them. I'm going to try and get in touch with Allen about coming back to Maine so I'll try and remember to confirm the numbers.

Of course, I would think that most of the amatures on this forum are better than average. If you are already using a lot of air, then multiplying by 14 seems almost ridiculous. It certainly seems impossible for me to increase by that much but just the thought of trying has really helped my playing.

Then I think about this student I have who doesn't seem in inhale at all (unless I remind him) before he plays and it makes sense to me. He could probably increase his air intake by a factor of 14 with room to spare!

Either way, more air is more better!

Yeah, I remember my 70+ year old trumpet teacher (Johnny Coppola) blowing into a 6-liter (I think) breathing bag and filling it up with no problem. I have about 5 inches on the guy, plus I was about 45 years younger, and I couldn't even come close to filling it up at the time. (I've since learned to relax and can do it now... usually).
