Don't know when it was postponed, but the CSO website audition notice now says: "Preliminary auditions tentatively scheduled: Fall 2003; Final audition, tentatively scheduled: Fall 2003; Employment date: Fall 2003." It's gonna be interesting, especially for those of us who are CSO regulars!

Wow!!

By "CSO regular" do you mean you play with them all the time? What's it like working with Daniel Barenboim? Ever play with Bud Herseth or George Vosburgh!!!?????

Hello, NewKid:

Sadly, no to all your questions! By CSO regular, I mean "regular subscriber to CSO concerts (33 years)." I live in the same town as Maestro Herseth and see him informally on occasion, but have never had the courage or chutzpah to talk about my playing when we've chatted. Like many TH posters, I play in church from time to time. BH lives very close to the church; maybe he'll drop in some Sunday and I'll be "discovered." Actually, I'd be discovered for what I am: an amateur with limited skills. But, like most of us, hopeful -- always hopeful! Regards!

I'm taking the audition...i probably won't win, but I think I'll probably make it past at least the first round (hopefully, anyway). It'll be a good experience.

Loudog,
Just curious, but what makes you so sure you'll get out of the first round, that's one hell of an assertion......

I admire Loudog's ability to think positively about the experience. Why shouldn't he feel confident about advancing? Furthermore, he didn't really "assert" anything. Rather, he expressed that he'd "hopefully" advance. Pretty humble, I'd say. Goal setting is an extremely powerful tool for auditioners, and the goal of advancing at this audition, while certainly involving a lot of work, is also certainly attainable.

Go for it, Loudog! Play your butt off!

I've done well in other auditions. I'm still only a college student, but I've held my own pretty well. Granted this is the CHICAGO SYMPHONY, but I think I should be able to make it past the first round...but that's not sayin' all that much. Thanks for the support guys, I appreciate it. It'll be a good time!

Good luck................but I don't think I have ever heard of a major symphony listening to a student player.
They screen applications, a commitee listens to tapes of applicants, resumes are taken.
Only the MOST qualified are invited to auditions. Players with jobs are usually the ones heard.
Unknowns don't get asked to audition, but you say you have been invited. Hmmmmm!

The Chicago Symphony listens to everyone who applies for auditions. Its a long standing tradition of the CSO, thinking that they might miss out on a "golden nugget" if they eliminate people by resumes.

So, it is not uncommon for players in college to be attending the CSO auditions. Other orchestras do weed people out, and invite only a select few, San Francisco and Dallas being two that I can think of.

Other orchestras will be less picky, and invite most everyone who appears to have a clue. Its a crap shoot as to whether or not you will get invited to an audition. Ive made the finals of some pretty big auditions, and still was not invited to the Dallas audition, but was invited to the MET.

Im sure there will be a large 'cattle-call' again for the CSO opening, there almost always is. The winner could be anyone who plays the best that day.

It might be Loudog....

...then again, it could be me!

Best of luck to all who are going!

Check the CSO webpage, they screen their auditions.
Imagine if they listened to any and everyone.

Wilmer,

I actually didn't get invited to audition, but I am putting in my application. I don't have a job yet, but we'll see what happens. I didn't realize they screened their applications like that...kind of a bummer, but oh well. I'm probably taking the Phoenix audition as well, so that may be a good shot for me. We'll see...I don't necessarily want to win a job, I just want to do a lot of auditioning until I'm a pro at that...then I'll move in and blow everyone away...hehehehe. Good luck to all who are invited to audition!

The Chicago Symphony's audition policy is that they will listen to anybody and everyone. You have the option to send a tape, to see if it is worth your time and money to fly to Chicago in person, but anyone can audition.

Wilmer, by "screen" they mean that the auditions will be anonymous, or the committe of orchestra members are behind a screen, so they can hear-but not see the applicant.

HFL

P.S. I don't think any invites have been mailed out yet, since after sending my resume, I got an email telling me it would be postponed until the fall.

These days it is difficult to get past the taped part of the audition.
They don't listen to unsolicted tapes, they have to ask you to send it.
Don't be surprised if no one is hired on the first go round.
This is one of the top trumpet positions in the world.
They will take their time hiring a player.

W-

This will actually be the 4th go around!!! Craig Morris won the job the 3rd time they held auditions for the spot. The first two times, nobody was good enough - and there were some heavy hitters there!
