Hey all,
I'm going to be playing a tribute to the band that is referred to as Miles Davis's "First Great Quintet" and am trying to make sure I have all the recordings of this band. So far I have:
Workin' With The Miles Davis Quintet (Prestige)
Cookin' With The Miles Davis Quintet (Prestige)
Steamin' With The Miles Davis Quintet (Prestige)
Relaxin' With The Miles Davis Quintet (Prestige)
'Round About Midnight (Columbia)
Bonus tracks from first two discs of the Complete Miles & Coltrane (Columbia)
Am I missing anything?
Thanks!

Thanks Jon! I hadn't thought of that one. It's on the Prestige box. _________________ Check out my new blog about the life of a working musician: OneWorkingMusician.com |

That first album with the quintet, 11/55, was originally called just "Miles" and it's also available as "Green Haze" which combines both "Miles" and a pre-quintet album, "The Musings of Miles" (6/55) that's without Coltrane and subs Oscar Pettiford for Paul Chambers. - Kyle |

Aside from some bootlegs, ie. Miles and Trane in Stockholm, etc, you seem to have it covered IMHO.... _________________ Brent Sandy

If memory serves, Green Haze presents Miles' last recording before Coltrane joined the band and then the first recording with Coltrane. It's an incredible side-by-side comparison of the effect 'Trane had on the band. In fact, the whole band plays incredibly better with 'Trane, in my opinion. _________________ Puttin’ On The Ritz |

I have the Miles Davis Prestige box set. I believe it has 10 CD's. Great stuff. _________________ Bach Trumpet Educator/Artist |

There are two lesser known albums after "Musings" but before the first quintet album with Trane: "Blue Moods", 7/55, with Mingus, Elvin Jones, Teddy Charles, and Britt Woodman. And "Quintet/Sextet", 8/55, with Milt Jackson, Ray Bryant, Percy Heath, Art Taylor, and Jackie McLean. But as noted, all 3 of these are before the first date with Trane, 11/55.
Jason, There is one track that should be added to your list. The album before "Musings" is the great 1954 Christmas Eve date with the Modern Jazz Giants. But, it also includes a "Round Midnight" track with Coltrane that was recorded Oct 26, 1956 at the "Steamin" session for Prestige. This is not the "Round Midnight" track from the Columbia album as that one was done a month and a half earlier at Columbia, Sept 10, 1956.
Whew! |

I had a double album that I think was Cookin' and Steamin' together, back when I was a young teen. I had that on the changer every night at bedtime, along with Liquid Love, Chicago VII, BS&T, Chase the Clouds Away, MF Horn I&II, EWF . . . _________________ Crazy Nate - Fine Yet Mellow Fellow
