Lot of nuggets in that piece. Can you imagine what it must have been like with all those players milling around the Roseland Ballroom vying for a job? Reminded me of the shape-up for dockhands in "On The Waterfront." _________________ Jim Hatfield

Jim: Thanks for posting the Bernie Glow article. I actually remember reading that article when it came out in the New Yorker in 1969.
BTW, it made me dust off my one album with Bernie Glow playing. It is an album of brass music put out in the mid-50's by the Classical and Jazz Society of New York. Its an interesting album because Glow, Miles Davis, JJ Johnson and other jazz greats are playing along with classical greats like John Ware and Mel Broiles. --When I googled one of the numbers, "Three Little Feelings" by John Lewis, I see that a CD of the album (plus some other music) was put out in 1996 as "The Birth of the Third Stream." (kinda of pricey though, so maybe its out of print.) My album jacket describes Glow's high F in the piece "Pharaoh" by Jimmy Giuffre as raising the roof off Columbia studios.
Thanks again for the memory. |

A little trivia
Doc used Bernie on his first two albums
To really appreciate His playing, get a copy
of Bill Potts" Porgy and Bess. The first chord tells all. |

Actually , that's not quite true -- Doc's first album on Command "Tempestuous Trumpet" (1961) did NOT feature a trumpet section at all -- just Doc and trombones, saxes, and rhythm --- His second album "The Big Band's Back in Town" (1962) DID have the standard big-band instrumentation with this stellar trumpet section---
Bernie Glow
Ernie Royal
Mel Davis
Marky Markowitz
Jimmy Maxwell
I could be wrong, but it sounds to be as if Ernie is playing lead on this date --- or maybe they split it ----- |

Hi Rickster. I stand corrected on that first Doc album. Maybe someone can ask Doc about that second album |

Here is "Granada" from 1962's "The Big Band's Back In Town" , with that monster trumpet section and a young (age 35) virtuoso Doc Severinsen.

Pat: Thank-you for this post. A friend of mine played it for me years ago when I was in college. I've been trying to track it down since then. _________________ - D. Arndt

I am not a lead player/ high-note specialist aficionado, , but Bernie Glow has always been one of my favourite players. Thanks. _________________ "If you don't live it, it won't come out of your horn." Bird

Actually, it looks like "The Birth of the Third Stream" was not the album after all. The one I'm looking for had Doc, Bernie Glow and Mel Broiles doing showcase stuff. This album only credits Glow and Broiles. Alas! The quest continues... _________________ - D. Arndt

Is the record you're thinking of "Music for Brass?" _________________ "If you don't live it, it won't come out of your horn." Bird

I think Columbia but that's reaching back into he stone age.
The record you're referring to, sounds like Muic for Brass, but I don't think Bernie Glow was on it . . . not sure. _________________ "If you don't live it, it won't come out of your horn." Bird

There's a story that involves (I think) either Bernie Glow or Ernie Royal. It might not involve either of them but it's still a good story. Apparently one of them was playing a studio gig involving a lot of high register playing. These were amazing lead players but they weren't the kind of players who could play these notes indefinitely. As the story goes, there was retake after retake. Finally, whoever was playing looked at the contractor and said, "If you wanted Snooky Young why didn't you hire Snooky Young?"
Great story. Fun stuff. _________________ HERMOKIWI |

I like that line, “He’s a real brute.” We sometimes call players “monsters”.
You don’t often hear an oboe or flute player called a monster. 😄 _________________ Craig Mitchell |
