Does anyone have any experience comparing these two mouthpieces for cornet? Thanks to some of you gurus here on TH i'm trying to find a more traditional sounding cornet mouthpiece and have the Olds lying around, but have never played it. Was just wondering if anyone could tell me how they compare to one another? Thanks in advance for any responses! _________________ Van Laar B6

Most say that the Olds 3 is similar to the Bach 7B mouthpiece, which is a deeper cup than the 3C. I think the 7B might have a more "traditional sound" than the 3C, but you might as well try the Bach 3, 5A, 5V, 7, or 7A for the best "traditional" sounds you can get with Bach. |

I'm looking for a more traditional cornet sound. Meaning not a trumpetlike sound. I've heard several people talk about how the C cup mouthpieces give a more "trumpetlike" sound to cornets. _________________ Van Laar B6

Mark Curry makes several cornet mouthpieces, amongst which are some that lend themselves more to british brass band or, if you like playing V cups, vintage (early 20th century) US band sound:

Neither of those two mouthpieces are conducive to producing a distinctive cornet sound. Buy a deep, British brass band-style mouthpiece and stick with it. You will be pleased with the results. _________________ "Brass bands are all very well in their place - outdoors and several miles away ." - Sir Thomas Beecham |
