This is great news! Avery Fisher hall is absolutely terrible. I've played there and the accoustics are atrocious! THank god for this move, however, i read that this move will not take place until at least 2006!

Yeah...Great news!!! I've played there a bunch and you have to work SO HARD to get the sound over the orchestra to the back of the hall. I think of it being a BIG barn. Carnigie is a HUGE upgrade!!!

Maybe now....in an effort to get incoming orchestras to perform there, Avery Fisher will have a monsterous renovation!!! Should be interesting!

I don't get it.
I've never been to the USA so I haven't been to any halls there,
but I have 2 recordings of NYPO with Bernstein recorded in Avery Fisher Hall.
Mahler 2nd and 3rd, and the sound and quality are really amazing.
The best recordings of the pieces I've heard.
Maybe those are mastering and recording tricks.
Well... yeah.. you can put a mic close to the brass section and then you'll hear them on the recording.
It's different hearing it from the stage then from the crowd.
Because the brass section on those performances are heard ! full and beatiful !

Tal,
That's studio/sound tech magic you're hearing (not to mention a great orchestra). AV is a nightmare to play in. Probably one of the one of the worst in the city. It feels like the sound just disappears about two feet in front of your bell. Not to mention the "severed tympani" hangin on the wall (which were supposed to help acoustics in one of their earlier attempts to improve acoustics) are a freakin' eyesore.

That trumpet section is SO good, they are heard despite the conditions and also despite having to play so loud as a result of the MOST LOUD low brass section in the world. No trombone section puts out that sound....they do it well too!
