I dun hear tell that the principal trumpet for the chicago symphony, as well as the new fourth player, are both not getting thier contract renewed, in essence, fired after this season. Anyone else heard news of this, and any speculation as to who will be in line for the spot?

where did you get this information?

I can't imagine that both don't get their contracts renewed, but I am very curious to learn about that!

Tage Larsen, the new fourth trumpet of CSO, recently won the audition for the Associate Prinipal job in the Cleveland Orchestra. However, he turned down the job and chose to stay with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra.

It would be hard believe that he would have chosen to stay, only to be axed at the end of the season. But stranger things have happened in that trumpet section.

Don't know anything about Craig Morris' situation.

"Darker Trumpet"-Are you 100% sure about this? If not then this "information" should not be posted on a public forum.

Yeah, interesting, I'm quite close to the Chicago area and the trumpet playing circles and haven't heard a word. Looks like it's time to investigate, though I'm sure this is completely fabricated or simply a game of "telephone"

Yes, this is why I was ASKING if anyone else had heard this. I would rather not disclose my source, but let me assure you they are QUITE credible. However, even I am quite reluctant to beleive this until I hear more news from a variety of sources.

I have not heard this rumor about Tage Larsen; perhaps what you have heard is out-of-date information about his predecessor on fourth trumpet, who did not receive tenure. There is a great deal of speculation about the fate of Craig Morris and I have heard these suggestions before, from sources I tend to regard as reliable. Regardless of what happens, we should all keep in mind that the probation process can be hell at the best of times, and that there are a variety of reasons why a player may not survive the review process -- some good, some not-so-good. I hope it is obvious to everybody that whether or not he gets tenure, anybody who can win an audition at that level has earned our respect. With or without tenure, I wouldn't want to be in his shoes.

I agree Nonsense, it's almost an impossible job to fill in that vacancy. People, colleaues and audiences, will always compare you with Mr. Herseth. It's very hard not to do so. Making it through your "probation" in those circumstances will be a very, very tough job.

I have been hearing about this for a long time too, but I have recently heard different people say that he is not coming back. They might still be wrong, but I think people are just waiting for the job advertisement to be published in the AFM.
If it's true, it'll be published in April or May for a summer audition. If not, congratulate a tenured Morris!

How does the Chicago Symphony decide who gets tenure? If its by committee, who is on the committee?

I heard today that Mr. Morris has accepted a teaching position at the University of Miami. I'm sure he'll do some great things for the studio there.

Firstly, what happened to all the recent posts???

Secondly, who has a real shot at winning this audition? Not just showing up, but really winning the job!? Bob Sullivan? Mark Ridenour? Mark Inouye? Who? There must be someone out there who can do this job!!! Let's hear some opinions.

Maybe the moderator deleted the posts...

I voted for Bob Sullivan.

why isn't there any official audition anouncement for Craig's spot?
I haven't seen one on the cso site. Maybe they're still thinking about it?

Most websites are routinely updated very slowly. The audition notice is
in this months International Musician (some of the missing posts from
last week had all that info).

Last I heard, some potential candidates were Charlie Guyer and Ronald Romm (forgive my spelling if it's off)

Ron Romm? No way. Sure you don't mean John Rommel?

NE,

Is the fact that Ron Romm cannot be expected to hold the position for 20+ years the main reason for the disbelief?

No insult intended to any older trumpet players out there, of course.
