This is a great resource. Thanks for doing this. If I knew about it when I was studying for my Master's oral exam, I would have used it.
Thanks for doing this. |

This is a FANTASTIC project! Thanks for your hard work here!
(I noticed your Boston Symphony page could use some updating. Some high quality young trumpeters have been recently added to the section ) _________________ "And he will send forth his angels with the sound of a mighty trumpet blast, and they will gather together his chosen ones from the farthest ends of the earth and heaven." - Matthew 24:31 |

Am so happy to have found this site....This project is of great interest to me, as I am researching info. on my grandfather, Wm. Thieck. Any information on him and his career would be greatly appreciated. _________________ Lori Brosh,

Lori,
Thanks for your message! I have crafted a simple bio for your grandfather and posted it in the Minnesota Orchestra (was the Minneapolis Symphony) folder and the San Francisco Symphony folder on this site. Would be great to include a photo! I'll post a separate topic to see if we can have others who may have known him or studied from The Art of Trumpet Playing share some stories.
Thanks again! _________________ Derek Reaban

I e-mailed Derek an old postcard picture of the trumpet section of the Minneapolis Symphony Orchestra, with Wm. Thieck, (my grandfather) standing back/center. I'm sure he will post it here for me...and/or to subject: "Stories about Wm. Thieck." _________________ Lori Brosh,

|
|
Okay. So here's something I can't quite wrap my brain around. I'm sure I'm not the only one that has asked this (and in the big scheme of things it may seem kinda petty) but, my question is in regards to the Co-Principal thing. If you've got, theoretically, TWO Principal trumpets (let's use NYP's Phil Smith & John Ware for this example), who plays the 1st Trpt/Crnt parts in recordings/concerts??? Like, say for example, Bernstein recorded Mahler's 2nd Sym with NYP for DG back in the 80s (it was released int in '8, in the same timeline when Phil Smith & John Ware were Co-Principals (Phil starting '78-'8. Who performed the 1st Trpt/Crnt part for the recording???
The same with Emeritus. An example for that would be John Head and James Thompson of the ASO. I read that John Head didn't actually retire until after '93 (check his profile). That meant he was still there when Robert Shaw recorded Mahler's 8th Sym. Was he performing the 1st Trpt part or was James???
Same thing with Acting-Principal. Oh, and don't even get me started on the orchestras from the UK. I just don't get how they do it there. _________________ A Banks |

Ladislav,
Thanks for your message. I looked back in the ensembles that I had started but never completed with this project, and found a start to the Czech Philharmonic Orchestra from the 2004-2005 season. I also remember reading a nice article about Miroslav Kejmar in the ITG Journal years ago.
This is what I included for the Czech Philharmonic in a post from 2005:
Quote: | Czech Philharmonic Orchestra
Principal Trumpet Players
Start-End______Name
2002-Current_______Jaroslav Halíř
1971-2002_________Christian Höcherl
1896-1971_________TBD
Web Site: Czech Philharmonic Orchestra Trumpet Section
Current roster for the 2004-2005 Season:
Jaroslav Halíř
Zdenik Šedivý
Miroslav Kejmar st.
Jiří Šedivý
Antonín Pecha
Reference:
Miroslav Kejmar reference |
After visiting the correct website for the orchestra that you provided I see the following five players in the trumpet section:
Jaroslav Halíř
Ladislav Kozderka
Zdeněk Šedivý Jiří Šedivý
Antonín Pecha
And this excellent photo:
halfway down this page
If you are able to help with names of Principal Players and the dates that they held the position to update this ensemble, that would be excellent. If you have an Archives Department for your orchestra that could help with players from before 1971 back to 1896, that would be outstanding.
Thanks! _________________ Derek Reaban
