|
|
I ordered the chamois trumpet lead pipe swab from Tim Wendt and got it in only one week. That's very quick (halfway across the globe).
The swab is very well made, exactly as advertised.
I tried it according to Tim's instructions. It's simple and easy to use.
It is very easy to thread through the tuning slide which I left connected to the lead pipe. You must thread from that end (near the bell) and not from the receiver side!
The weights inside the cord make it a breeze to tread. After only a couple of inches inside, you tip the trumpet with the receiver end down, bell up and the cord moves in when you keep inserting it, due to the weights, until the weight side exits from the receiver. It's long enough to thread through lead pipe and tuning slide together.
I swabbed twice to make sure it works well and it works like a charm.
It'll do the job of removing moisture and any particles after each playing session.
I am very happy with this purchase and will recommend it to any trumpet player. Thank you Tim. _________________ Michael Greenberg

How often do you have to clean the swab and how many times can you clean it before you need a new one? _________________ Either is fine. My chops always feel great

I'll chime in on this one.
You can clean the swab whenever you want. I use warm water & liquid dish soap. Wring it out, let it dry, it's good to go.
Longevity...until I lost it a few months ago (dark pit), I still used, on a regular basis, the prototype that I hand-stitched together in Sept., 2006.
The swab had darkened a bit in color (from use), the cord had stretched just a little (also from use), and it was fraying a little...from use.
6 1/2 years and it was still swabbing strong. Not too bad for a $15 investment, eh? _________________ Tim Wendt

Mine still look and work great, so I have no idea how long they will last. Longer than me, probably. _________________ Matt Finley https://mattfinley.bandcamp.com/releases

I doubt if a better product for the money can be found. It just keeps on cleaning and cleaning.

The one I used before Tim's model only lasted 2 uses before it broke.
This one looks to be pretty durable. Not saying it's going to last forever, because that's just riduculous, but it's quite good. _________________ "Music is like candy, you throw the (w)rappers away." |

It would probably stay cleaner longer if you cleaned the horn and used it on a regular basis to keep the horn clean, right?
I'll end up buying one of these very soon I'm sure. _________________ (List horns here) |

I'm curious, what are the negative effects of moisture in the trumpet? Obviously when it gets too much we gurgle but is there an advantage to be gained by swabbing it out every session like a clarinetist? |

Tim,
Never figured out how to do that: get the thing through a tuning slide. _________________ 1972 Selmer Radial |

Leave the tuning slide in the lead pipe, insert the weights into the open tuning slide pipe, then start twisting & spinning it like you're a Fr. Horn player!
It might take a bit of shaking, as the cord also absorbs moisture in the pipe (and it might stick a bit in that process), but it will go all the way through with plenty of cord left over to get a good grip.
I personally like to pull the cord & get enough to wrap it around my fingers, then pull more to get enough to wrap again...repeat as needed. That way I've got more control of the procedure. Usually takes maybe 3 or 4 pull / wraps to get the job done. _________________ Tim Wendt

I noticed that you have a Schilke B1.
With the B1 you need to pull the tuning slide completely off first and re-insert the tuning slide's lead pipe side into the lead pipe while the other side remains free. This is easy to do and allows you to swab both lead pipe and tuning slide at the same time, indeed without any need to re-grease the tuning slide. Once you insert the cord all the way to the bend, start turning the trumpet with the bell up. The weights in the cord will tend to "fall" toward the receiver due to gravitation, while you continue to insert the cord. _________________ Michael Greenberg

Another thumbs up for The Best Damn Leadpipe Swab......Period!
Works great, it took me just a bit of practice to get the hang of working it through the leadpipe; I sort of jiggle and move the horn a bit.
Great product!

I also use this swab and love it. Easy, quick, and helps keep things clean and dry.
I'd also like to say how nice it was to order from Tim. My original order seemed to have been lost, it was VERY delayed. In the meantime, he went ahead and sent another one out free of charge. The original finally showed up a couple weeks later, so now I have 2 |
