Not sure this is the right forum for this but, hey, what's more fundemental to a musician than hearing, huh?
Anyway, I had my hearing tested today and the resuts ("moderate to severe loss") led me to order a pair of Bernafon 9 Chronos hearing aids. The audioogist said they are a good choice for musicians.
Anyone know anything about Bernafons. Also, what can I expect when I go to my first rehearsal/gig weariing these things? Will it freak me out, throw my intonation off, cause me to give up playing because I can hear what I really sound like? What? _________________ Jim Hatfield

Got mine at Costco. $2,600. I could buy a pretty nice horn for that. As Elmore Leonard says, gettin' old ain't for pussies. _________________ Jim Hatfield

Yeah, I've destroyed my hearing too. Some from playing in loud bands, and some from the daily bashing my ears take in a band room with an 8 foot ceiling and 60 beginners.
I'm very interested in this. My wife would like for me to get them, but I am concerned that I'll spend a bunch of money and not like them. Really, I can't imagine wearing them on a gig. _________________ Music is a fire in your belly, fighting to get out. You'd better put a horn in the way before someone gets hurt. |

jhatpro,
I have a set of Widex programmables that would cost about $5K to replace. I have three programs on them. Probably no one here is as deaf as I am. I find that the programs for speech amplify sounds under 1000 Hz and work well (my audiologist is something of a maverick and doesn't believe in boosting high frequencies which you hear very poorly). However, for music, we amplify a fuller spectrum. I find that if I don't use the "music" program, I start to use too much mpc pressure and crap out over high C.
On my speech program, some of the important overtones are cut out and the trumpet sounds like a duck. I'll be seeing the audiologist soon for a readjustment, so if you need details, I'll ask him for them. It is important to have the aides set up right and it can take some time to do that. I have had continuous adjustments over the past five years or so, about every three months. . . .
If you guys have good hearing, use earplugs and don't get in a bad situation . . . if not, get aides, you probably don't know what you're missing. When I first got my aides, I could hear my shoes brushing on the carpet and the change jingling in my pocket again . . . what a rush!!! _________________ royjohn

I emailed Dr. Marshall Chasin, director of auditory research for a Canadian organization speciaizing in hearing for musicians, and he gave high marks for the Bernafon 9 Chronos with Live Music feature.
There's a huge amount of information about musicians and hearing on his clinic's website.

Sounds like you got a good deal, Jim. All the models I've tested are over $5,000/pair. Hearing aids are an anomaly in that as technology gets better the price goes up, not down.
I'm planning on getting a pair soon but I don't know what yet. My hearing loss is down about 45% but the audiologist said the pattern looks more genetic than due to damage. I'm sure mowing grass as a kid with no hearing protection didn't help.

I have the Widex pair with remote volume function and various programs in the aids. I have found that I cannot use them for community band, because all I hear is myself. I have tried using the normal, reduced noise, music and reverse focus programs, and just can't hear the other sections well enough. I also play in a church handbell choir on the upper octave bells, and can't use them there either. I just take them out when playing with either group. YMMV, as always.

What's this about herring-ade? You just put the fish in a blender, add some sugar and water, pour over ice, and you've got a nice refreshing beverage.
Sorry, I don't mean to joke about something that isn't funny at all. Good luck.

I looked at the Chronos 9s briefly, but I couldn't see how you get them set up and programmed, which is 90% of getting them to work right for you. I know in the past I looked at aides which you program yourself and they are 50% cheaper, but I wasn't sure that was the way to go and that I could get them set up right.
In addition to that, behind the ear aides need ear molds made and the tubing gets hard from time to time, affecting the aide's frequency response. Tubing needs to be changed about every three months. Then at some point the aides will need to be repaired . . . if you buy through your audiologist, all of this is included in the price.
jhatpro, if these Chronos 9's work for you, I'd be interested in how it goes. Hope they are returnable if you can't use them. _________________ royjohn

RJ, I'll post follow-up here. First opportunity I'll have to wear them in an ensemble setting will be a week from now at brass band rehearsal.
In the meantime, can you tell me how to interpret the tone audiometry report I received? It has graphs for right and left ears with db numbers for various Hz. _________________ Jim Hatfield

I talked to a drummer who said he's very happy with his hearing aid. I asked him "What kind is it?" He said "a quarter to nine." _________________ Jim Hatfield

Whereupon, being a drummer, he followed up with a rim shot.

Puzzing over whether a musician wth moderate to severe hearing loss should wear hearing aids or ear plugs in performance, I found this:
