Check out Chris Gekker's recording. Mr. Ewazen wrote the piece for Mr. Gekker. He has such a nice lyrical sound. The recording is on an American Brass Group CD with a bunch of other Ewazen pieces. _________________ Matt Cyr

Hmmm.... The best 20th century sonata?
I would at least place the Hindemith and the Stevens above the Ewazen, two pieces that have stood the test of time. |

Well, I agree that the Halsey Stevens and the Hindemith Sonatas are more standard in the repertoire, the Ewazen sonata is relatively new. I feel very strongly that the Ewazen will eventually find it's place among the significant 20th century rep.
20 years from now, I bet most of the college students will be doing the Ewazen right alongside the Hindemith and the Stevens on their recitals. Just my opinion, FWIW.

It's funny because a few of my friends are already doing it and I consider it as part of the trumpet repertoire. |

Loudog,
I am genuinely curious to find out what things about this piece make you give it such high praise. I'm not trying to challenge you, just get your thoughts. Please feel free to respond, if you'd like.

Sorry it took me so long to reply! I must have missed the previous posts. I think that the level of musicianship it requires to effectively perform this piece ranks it up there with the top literature. His music is tonal, and his compositional style is very unique. His melodies and harmonizations fit so well that I thought he would have been a trumpet player at first. He writes very well for the trumpet! Also, the second movement is absolutely beautiful and moving...i get goosebumps each time I hear it.
If you haven't heard it, GO LISTEN TO IT!! |

It's funny that it is mentioned what makes this piece so good. I think Ewazen is a great composer in general while some people (to remain unnamed because many people here won't know them anyway) think he is mediocre. I have also played the trumpet sextet piece also which I find very good. |

some of his music does sound the same but alot of it is good IMO.
I really like the piece of his that Phil Smith put out a few years ago. |
