I saw Geoff perform at a few jazz festivals and then (Monterey) Next Generation Jazz Orchestra last year and his solos always astounded me. I know he is based on the east coast but hoped to see him more and more as he gets older, but alas his public performances seem to be less and less. Does anyone know if he is working on a major project or attending University? It seems to me he is underrated and not known as widely as he should be. |

I believe Geoff is attending the Manhattan School of Music this fall...I am sure we will see him around NYC soon. _________________ Todd A. Stoll

During this current year's concert season alone, Geoff's talent takes him to perform as featured jazz artist in DE, VA, MI, NJ, D.C., TX, CA, MD, OH, IN, MA, PA and NYC; as concert band soloist in FL and NC.
Geoff is now completing his sophmore year of high school in his hometown of Alexandria, VA."
I don't know if this is correct or if Jeff's site is out of date, but it's from this.

I couldn't find that schedule. When I look at his Facebook page & his own website they show no upcoming performances.

Geoff is getting to an age at which other kids are catching up with him so he doesn't stand out as much against his peers as he did when he was a little kid. According to ITG when he received the March, 2015 ITG Young Artist Award he was a sophomore in high school. If that's accurate then he graduated from high school in 2017, so by now he'd probably be 19 years old. That would make him college age by now.
Here's the article:
https://www.trumpetguild.org/2014-12-24-23-07-20/young-artist-awards/1045-youth2015mar
There's a video of Geoff dated 1-15-17 playing Cherokee. He does a very nice job on that video.
Here's a link:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hYIqulHsCQw
That being said, I heard Ryan Kisor playing Cherokee at the same age and Ryan was beyond unbelievable. He was galaxies beyond Geoff. It was shocking. He sounded like Clifford Brown.
So maybe time has caught up with Geoff and that's the reason he seems to have disappeared. Or maybe he's just taking a break. It would be nice to see something current from Geoff. He certainly was a remarkable player at a very young age.
Does anyone know where he is now? _________________ HERMOKIWI |

Geoff Gallante is an incredibly talented trumpet player. When he was about 10 years old, he was astounding, playing at about a 20 year old's level. Now that he's about 20...? (He certainly plays jazz a thousand times better than I do.) When I hear a child prodigy, I always ask myself what would I think if I didn't know his or her age. Or gender, for that matter. Objectivity is hard. That's why more and more orchestras are using screens for their entire audition process, beginning to end, for example. We are all influenced by extra-musical things unless we use only our ears. Hard to do that when we have information about the player that is not related to music. |

I always got a kick out of this. And the reactions from his band mates is choice.

During interviews when he first started at 4 - 5 yrs old he would often remark, "Maynard Ferguson is the best trumper player"..possibly influenced by his teacher at the time (Detwiller).
Funny thing is that he could easily have played the intro to Mac Park for audiences at the time..and with his embouchure, perhaps a few high notes as well. |

*Detwiler
Warning. Name dropping moment.
Dave (Detwiler) was my long time trumpet teacher growing up, a MONSTER lead player for the Army Blues, and my old friend. He still plays a few nights every year at Blues Alley (in Washington DC), and when I'm in town, always manages to embarrass me if I'm in the audience.
Dave used to pick on me for my infatuation with Maynard, and then I would look over and see his record collection (that was heavily Maynard influenced). I miss our time together, and him tapping me on the shoulder (or head) to stay on the beat.
Glad to see one of his students killing it! _________________ My go-to Trumpet and Flugel: Thane.

Some years back, Geoff soloed with the community band I was playing in.
At at his age, maybe 11, he could play the heck out of the horn. Great sound, excellent technique, tasteful playing, and solid musicianship.
Plus, he was a down to earth young man and could sing the entire F-Troop theme song with me. (It was his favorite TV show). He was a really nice kid with a great family. His pianist grandmother came out and did a duet with him.
We did Bugler's Holiday with Geoff on first. The only thing I had to do was keep up with him and play the high C at the end. He didn't think he could play it loud enough. He had range, but he stayed within his limits.

Here's a burnin' version of "Things to Come" by MSM with a nice solo by Geoff. Talk about a tight band, yikes!

Man, that's some scary playing. Does MSM mean Manhattan School of Music? I took a workshop from MSM some years back. Man, the faculty was unbelievable. _________________ "If you don't live it, it won't come out of your horn." Bird

Yes it does. I didn't know Faddis was on the faculty, or was he a guest soloist/conductor for this event? I could have done without the chalkboard screech approach to the high note trumpet. Dropping it in once would have been interesting, otherwise bringing it down into the double-register would have been a better musical choice. _________________ MF Fan

I wouldn't be surprised if that was Fadis' influence, whose improvised solos, BTW, have never moved me for that very reason. _________________ "If you don't live it, it won't come out of your horn." Bird

Geoff plays with a nice sound but the plus of seeing him play Cherokee on Youtube was this came up on the right side.
I never cease to be entertained by this Swedish Wonder.
