|
|
Honestly had no idea where to post this question.
I was wondering any trumpet players here had a similar problem, or are dermatologists by day.
For the last year or so, I have been developing cuts, or cracks on my fingers at contact points where I hold the horn, on my left hand.
Had a metal allergy test done, no clear results.
Definitely horn related. If I stop playing for a couple of weeks, they heal. Within a week of starting to play again, they return.
Even when wearing a cotton glove...
It's quite painful, so I'm wondering if anyone has experienced any like this, and how they dealt with this.
Thanks in advance for any thoughts. |

Do you think they might be 'pressure related', as opposed to a 'material sensitivity'? Any similar problems on your right hand.
Have you done any recent work with hand tools that require grip pressure with your left hand?
Has any testing of the blood flow in your hand & fingers been done? _________________ Most Important Note ? - the next one !
KNOW (see) what the next note is BEFORE you have to play it.
PLAY the next note 'on time' and 'in rhythm'.
Oh ya, watch the conductor - they set what is 'on time'. |

Thanks for your reply, Jay.
No, no work with pressure with hand tools.
Have not had blood flow checked in the hand.
Just going by what my dermatologist said, that sometimes allergies can really take off, when we get to a "certain age"..(I'm 65)
She also said they can't test for everything, so I'm at bit of a loss.. |

Is your hand coming in contact with any raw brass? If not, what is the finish on the horn? _________________ HERMOKIWI |

Have you tried plastic gloves? Some sort of medical glove?
(I'm thinking: try food grade plastic gloves over the cotton gloves.) |

Or get 9ne of those leather hand guards that cover all contact points, maybe. _________________ huntman10

no raw brass. Happens on both my silver and lacquer horns..
Jerry,
Thanks, I have mot tried a plastic, or medical grade glove..
That's certainly an idea.

Ironically, I put leather hanguards on all my horns..
No idea how something is getting through.. |

Sorry to hear about this.
This is only your LEFT hand, not your RIGHT hand. If true, it seems less likely that you're reacting to something on your horn.
You had negative testing to metal allergies, which to me, makes sense. It seems unlikely to be a metal allergy, since both lacquer and silver horns are causing this.
I like the idea of trying valve guards that cover all contact points or trying gloves, to see what happens.
I wonder if you can change how you hold the horn, to test the "pressure sensitive" theory Jay mentioned.
Since you went to a dermatologist, I assume you've been in contact with your primary care doctor. Hopefully he/she can help you map out a plan to figure this out.
Best of luck with this.

Any chance you've developed a sensitivity to the leather handguard or some chemical that may have leached into the porous handguard? _________________ "I'm an engineer, which means I think I know a whole bunch of stuff I really don't."

Another possibility is a type of 'nerve illness', brought on by physical pressure. Shingles related?
I take the supplement Lysine daily in the hope it might prevent 'cold sores' or reduce their severity - been doing that for many years with no problems. _________________ Most Important Note ? - the next one !
